What taxes should we pay?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Thu Apr 08, 2010 4:49 pm

Nearly half of US households escape fed income tax
Recession, new tax credits have nearly half of US households paying no federal income tax
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nearly-ha ... l?x=0&.v=1

And since we are facing tax hikes this year already, including but not limited to the Dems letting the tax cuts from 2002 expire, raising the tax rates across the board (which only really effects people that actually pay taxes), this is going to likely break over 50%....

Well, the Value Added Tax is being floated already, so brace yourselves!

EDIT - so, given the state of the world today, what should be a fair tax burden to impose.

State/Provincial sales tax:
State/Provinicial income tax:
Federal sales tax:
Federal income tax:
Any special considerations? Things that would receive special taxes?

A bonus tax would be nice. Getting a bonus of $1 million or more should be subjected to a 50% tax, It can be called the Goldman Sachs tax.

Off the top, or after they pay the 35% (soon to be 39%) in tax they're already required to pay?

Whichever, just so long as they pay.

I might agree with you there....I would LOVE to not have to think about fucking income tax returns. Wuddafuh?

I think I'd be willing to pay 15% more in taxes, if I didn't have to ever file another income tax return....blech! :lay:

My bonuses aren't anything near a million dollars, but it's still a huge financial punch in the gut when they take 35% of it away to punish me for having done a good enough job to get a bonus.

People who gleefully talk about extremely punitive taxes on things like bonuses don't seem to realize that it's not just wealthy CEOs and Wall Street types who get hit with these taxes.

If you make that much to be taxed at 35% (over $300,000) you'll get very little sympathy from most people.

That's what Republicans say? Frankly, if the whole "make someone else pay" is what you object to, then I'd think you'd be criticizing Democrats moreso than Republicans.

Really? Because Republicans simply shift the blame off the government by allowing industry to tax us at the cash register.

Fuck it all, tax religions and increase the Tax for those in the highest income bracket. Four private yachts is four too many, they can live with just having one.

Nope. The republicans are for protecting the rich and letting the middle class pay. After eight years of Bush and six years of a republican controlled congress the middle class has taken a devastating hit.
