I think most wars have not been religiously motivated, but I not a historian. Is there any justification for thinking most, or even a large proportion, of wars have been religiously motivated? Does anyone know of an authoritative list of religious / non-religious wars?

Some degree of xenophibia probably plays a part in most conflicts. 'They aren't like us' may be a necessary mind-set for killing lots of people. That isn't religious motivation, although religion might one of various 'not like us' factors.

For me it's just a few decades of researching wars. Most wars are fought for a profit of some kind. There are wars fought for religion, but money is a more powerful motivator.

Often as not, religion is just used as a rallying cry to manufacture consensus among the masses. The people in the funny hats are usually in it for political/economic gain in one way or another.
