Re: Range, azimuth, and elevation acquired. Raze that mosque
During the Normandy D-Day a USN destroyer received a fire mission to take out the steeple of a church that was believed to be an OP for German arty. Legend has it that the DD nailed it in one shot. Reality was it took seven. Still good shooting in my opinion. If anyone whines about a minaret being shot up, tell them the US military is non-denominational.

That depends on your definition of religion. People don't need belief in supernatural deities to go to war.Tigger wrote:Yep. Aren't they all, really?GrahamH wrote:It is a religious war then.

"Sir, we did NOT blow up that building. Technically, we just removed about 6 feet of ground from under it. You do see the the distinction, don't you sir?"Mysturji wrote:The British Army have apologised: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nort ... 609650.stm

Sooner or later, it's going to become more feasible to spray down every populated square meter of Earth with pig blood than to keep dealing with these wingnuts.

Well, it's religious for a couple of folks on both sides, but not all of them.

Re: Range, azimuth, and elevation acquired. Raze that mosque
I think most wars have not been religiously motivated, but I not a historian. Is there any justification for thinking most, or even a large proportion, of wars have been religiously motivated? Does anyone know of an authoritative list of religious / non-religious wars?
Some degree of xenophibia probably plays a part in most conflicts. 'They aren't like us' may be a necessary mind-set for killing lots of people. That isn't religious motivation, although religion might one of various 'not like us' factors.
