Ban Ronald McDonald?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:29 am

This was on the news over the weekend:

http://www.slashfood.com/2010/03/29/act ... tirement/2

This kind of thing just gets me riled up. I have no problem with "activists" stating their opinion, writing articles and books, boycotting what they don't like, and trying to persuade, in the marketplace of ideas, that something like Ronald McDonald is bad. However, inevitably, these pukes try to force their demented "do as I say" mentality down everyone's throats via legislation. They want an outright ban.

They want to make it illegal for McDonald's to use their clown mascot to advertise their product. I mean... WTF? You just knew this road was going to be traveled when we sat back and let these freaks make Joe Camel illegal...

Without places like McDonald's fewer people would be overweight and likely to die sooner. So McD's doing a public service by thinning out the population. :hehe: If they need Ronnie to do that, mo' powah to them.

Anyway, I blame Darwin.

No don't ban, that would be a free speech issue. Just ban advertising aimed at kids, including product placement in films and TV. Not all that hard.
If McD's didn't target that demographic, it wouldn't use Ronald, that's for fucking sure.

Ban advertisements for automobiles - kids see them and then want cars - cars kill people and harm the environment.

Ban advertisements for video games aimed at kids - huge cause of obesity...

No...... McD use Ronald to sell more shit. Fine. Not a problem. But the advertisements for them were (at least in Britain) aimed squarely at the pre-teen demographic, eg Saturday Morning TV. Over here now, research into the issue has been unclear and contested (surprise surprise, by Advertisers), but from the Ofcom report here:

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/tv/rep ... od_ads/#36

TV has a "modest" effect on HFSS (High Fat Salt Sugar) product's attractiveness on a child's choice.

You seem to be taking it as a given that it is appropriate for the government to be concerned with the fat, salt and sugar intake of its free citizens....

Except children aren't free citizens. Children are censorsed from many different things for their own good, and advertisers purposefully manipulate them for commercial gain.

Not really, but we prosecute parents who refuse to school a child. The government takes an interest.
We don't play horror flicks on a Saturday Morning. The government takes an interest.

Advertisers know full well that "pester power" is a genuine business strategy and will try to get the most profit from it.
You may say, "Ahh well it's the parents fault for being weak willed and giving into their brats."
So can we rely on people to do the right thing with reference to family nutrition? That is the option we have now.

It just makes sense to me, to reduce the exposure of children to this type of advertising.

I will concede, it is a contentious topic and no studies either way seem to be conclusive.

How would you combat child hood obesity? Or would you let nature take it's course and do nothing?
