"Dumbass Move of the Day" thread. First award goes to...

I nominate these dumbasses who picked a fucking WARSHIP as a target to pirate:

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04/01/u- ... /?hpt=Sbin
U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

If you've got a better one, by all means, post it here. I, for one, would love to see what would beat that. :tea:

A few weeks ago the exact same thing happened to a Dutch war vessel in front of the Somalian coast.

It probably really is desperation, coupled with hunger. Most of those pirates are teenagers with no hope, nothing left to lose. Getting captured might mean they get a few meals while in captivity.
I heard in a dutch broadcast that a few of the teens, said they were forced to go and become pirates by their parents and some credence was given to this, much the same as the boys that are captured and forced to become soldiers in other parts of the world.

Involuntary conscripts aside, there's been millions sunk into boats and guns by a few people who seem to have millions to gamble. If it were just unorganized, unconnected small groups of hungry locals, they'd most likely use sell/trade the guns for tackle/nets and fish from the boats. There's greed involved somewhere, not just need, seems.

They are often fishermen driven out by foreign trawler boats exploiting the fact that there is no regulations on what they can and can't catch and the fucked up thing is that these foreign navies are protecting the unregulated rape and pillage of Somalian waters. Not to mention foreign ships dumping nuclear and chemical waste in their waters completely ruining any chance to make a living and affecting the health of there families and village moreover.

Who are the pirates? i'm sure the govt protecting these foreign pirates not the evil dark skinned people would accept such bullshit happening in their waters.

Whilst i'm not saying these pirates are angels we must look at the reasons why they are doing to solve the problem and i don't think the governments that are involved have any interest in that.

I'm thinking that the ship-board crews are most likely desperate, displaced, disenfranchized fishermen and the like, as you suggest, but they're being groomed and recruited (but apparently not actually trained) by big money. Given the area, I suspect that the whole thing is designed to finance militants and/or terrorists, whether secular rebels or Islamic.
