What are you guys trying to do here? Make us all so bored that we actually want the drama to start up again?  :? :hehe:

No .... I really don't want the drama to start up again... but at least make the derail interesting FFS. :nono:

OP from this thread:
devogue wrote:Sorry if this has been brought up before.

I notice that on the new forum ( http://www.rationalskepticism.org ) personal discussions about sex are not allowed - the agrrement has been lifted wholesale from RDF.

I assume that the FUA there at the moment is only temporary and that this abberation will be removed now that there is no greatly liked and loveable person to protect.
Nothing wrong with that - very temperate.

devogue wrote:I think I'll start a new thread there.

Something like...

What does semen taste like? Seriously.
Bit of fun and mischief, as I have admitted to on several occasions.
devogue wrote:Done.

:hehe:
Note mischievous :hehe: . At this point I was really stretching the sex thing to the limit for a bit of fun.

Confusion. See above.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Then you started your tech support thread at RatSkep

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
...and settled down in to a serious discussion about the issue - please note: did I start a huge kick up or fuss about my thread about the taste of semen being removed, or did I move quickly on to a more measured tone?

If you are going to drag up my posting history, I would suggest you do so more thoroughly to show the entire picture - no one likes a quote-miner. Or perhaps you didn't understand the significance of the following sentence:
Forgetting silly stuff like "What does semen taste like?" and gratuitous discussions about fisting etc for a second - what reasons are there now for not being able to discuss personal sexual experiences?
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/feedb ... tml#p29617

In that one sentence I have dismissed my earlier mucking about and put it in a little box labelled "silly" and "gratuitous". Now I happen to think that it was a bit of good fun, but it was important that I conceded that to those people on the forum who don't want to see such posts - it was important to do that so we could move on and discuss the overall issue of discussing sex in a mature and calm manner. The thread was posted in the correct forum (Feedback, Site Suggestions...) and the tone of the thread was relaxed, inquisitive and measured. There was no stamping of feet, no demands, nothing that could be described as unreasonable.

At Rationalia:

I'm honestly not trying to flame or anything. I just want to discover the vibe of the new forum.
What? Is that meant to be some kind of indictment against me or something? :dono:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

NOTE: You are correct that you were not inciting drama per se in any of your posts on the tech support thread. You asked a question and your question was answered.

Your response to this was:

Now you are making a complete fool of yourself, trying desperately to tie these two things together. As Bella has pointed out, I started that fun thread three hours before the serious thread in Tech Support was locked. I was obviously taking the piss and having a laugh.

Helloooo stranger!

Have you noticed how all those hateful mods at RDF have got their claws in to this bright shiny new forum as well? Everyone knows they said "Yes, Josh. You're right Josh. Pull the forum, Josh. That's what you should do." Now they're all here, crawling like Phylloxera through Chateau Lafite's hallowed vines...

I think you and I should be mods, Pauline. We will lay the foundations for a thousand year reich new dawn, a benevolent, Arthurian Camelot of a forum, where all the members shall play and frolic, where spunk will be seen for the beautiful natural ejaculate that it is, where fisting shall be seen in Olympian Stronger, Faster, Higher terms and where the name devogue will ring like thunder on a summer day, promising drama, refreshment, hope and fire...
I can't believe you've cited that. It's a complete and utter piss take, a wind-up and a bit of fun (check the thousand year reich bit :whisper: )

Correct me if I've missed something, but so far the only argument I've seen from you as to why it is so important that RatSkep changes our FUA to include personal sexual discussion is:
At Rationalia:
http://www.rationalia.com/forum/viewtop ... 25#p380803
devogue wrote:Well, I like people like Goldenmane who just never got the vibe here, but I can't talk about sex stuff there - it's just little things like that.

So you want to talk about sex with Goldenmane...?

:sarcstart: well let's just change our FUA and the existing culture of our community so you can do that... :console: :sarcend:
It's not your FUA, it's the beloved Richard Dawkins' and Josh Timonen's.

And once again, you must stop implying that I am an outsider - it's as much my community as anyone elses. I have as much of a say as anyone else, or at least I should have but there is the slight problem of perfectly valid threads being locked. You see, it's not about me getting my way or changing the whole culture of the forum, it's about having a bloody platform and being allowed to express my point of view whether it goes against the grain of the whole community or not. If you honestly think that one person countering my argument followed by another posting a one word "Agreed" justifies the end of debate and locking down a thread then more fool you.

As for discussions about sex, the mods and membership here have got things down to a fine art - anything overtly sexual and explicit is either posted or moved in to NSFW, but that does not mean that sexual banter does not occur in other parts of the forum like the Pub - gentle innuendo, in-jokes, suggestive chat that helps to break down barriers between cold, blank usernames to create real warmth and a real sense of community. Why should RatSkep miss out on that? It doesn't have to be completely OTT discussions about shit-eating and fisting, just that along with the chat in Off Topic about favourite bands, films and day to day life people can add that little bit of seasoning with a bit of a laugh about the joys, fun, embarrassment, humour and sheer humanity of sex. It's only a slippery slope if the mods let it slip - what I think is far worse is completely authoritarian censorship and a refusal to let adults just behave like adults.

Although it was clear that the more extreme and graphic sexual banter could not continue in 2008, one of the most regrettable outcomes of the rules regarding sexual discussion on RDF was not this illusion that most of us at TAF (then here) had been brow-beaten and spat upon - it was that a particular avenue to getting to know people was removed. By that I mean that I got to know people like Cali, Orpheus, Goldenmane, Hackenslash and dozens more because they could lower their guard completely and relax for a while away from the heat of debate on the main forums - if one (major) area of discussion in Off Topic is removed then how can they let their hair down completely? I know you will say they should post here, but a great many people don't like "switching" forums - I feel (and I'm sure others do) that I have missed out on a whole lot of fun and camaraderie with some of the smartest, most articulate people on the net because the forum has stuck a poker up all our backs and so many new members on RDF have been like so many Borg drones, an army of Mr Logics with, at the risk of sounding melodramatic but there is some truth, a major part of their humanity suppressed. It's not as simple as RatSkep for the serious stuff and Rationalia for the frivolous and the nonsensical - in fact such an assessment does the membership of this forum a grave disservice.

Now, that's just OT - but, perhaps even more importantly, what about personal sexual experience within serious discussions. What if a female member decides that her own experience about cock size while having sex would be of merit in a debate about female sexual arousal? Should she really just button it when her post might energise the debate or move it to another level? It's probably a poor example, but I hope you get the idea.

So it is not flaming, trolling or kicking up a stink and "drama" for the sake of it. The new forum is in its infancy and I think that members have a right, even a duty, to call attention to areas of forum policy which might be improved or changed. If the membership as a whole disagrees, then so be it, but I think that lame excuses about all the "hard work" in setting up the new community and not "having time for drama" are just that - lame. I have no doubt at all that if the same topic is raised a year from now there will be some other slap down and excuses wheeled out.
