Harper does not have that much of a sway over Canadian politics, last time I checked...he does not have a majority.

He still sucks.

The Liberals have been quite friendly towards Mr. Harper, more than one would think. They supported the escalation in Afghanistan, and even some of Harper's budget plans.

Context: UK and American politicians discussing potential problems at an upcoming UN meeting (resolution on war)

Michael Rodgers: No, no, no, you needn't worry about the Canadians, they're just happy to be there.
[pause]
Michael Rodgers: Yes, well, they always look surprised when they're invited

Canada...? :? Oh right, this thing around me. :tea:

Also, wasn't our parliament going to essentially go on vacation/strike/whatever they call it out there in Ottawa? My Russian friends told me that, they get incessant Canadian news on TV due to the Olympics... and thus hear more about Canadian politics than we do over here... :shifty:

Considering a move to Canada at the moment.... hmm, still probably has some advantages over Russia. Remember we have Darth Putin in charge over here.... erm, or is it Medvedev? Its so confusing.

By American standards, Harper is a socialist.

Fox News was thinking: damn, this guy is for regulations?

When the next elections come, Canadians, I'd suggest voting for the NDP or the Liberals (I'd vote for the former),so we can drive these conservatives the hell out of Canada and move towards some more social progress.

I prefer the NDP but I voted for the Liberals since they were a popular candidate around here and above all else, I didn't want to see the Tories in power. That's called strategic voting, my friends. It was my first election for which I was eligible to vote and I was already jaded.

About me: If I had my way I'd buy a few acres of land and an old tractor. I'd drive the old tractor around the land and passers-by would stop to ask me what kind of crop I was farming. "Crop?" I'd say, "Crops are work, I'm planting ideas."

I've voted NDP in every federal election so far, and I see no reason to change that. They are the party most likely to base their policies on verifiable fact and the available science. Far from perfect, but better than the others.

As for Harper being a socialist by American standards: No. He's closer to the Republicans than anything and if we make the mistake of giving him a majority he'll show it openly. I've been following this guy's career for most of my adult life, and he didn't suddenly change his mind about everything just in time for the 2006 election.

Does sound like to me that Canadian politics isnt that different to British, ie centrist no real extremists at least in signficant numbers unlike in the last American election where it was a choice between

Creationist nutjob who wants armageddon
non-nutjob

alas 47% of people voted for the nutjob

Actually, the American elections seem like they're similar. It's a choice between Republican and Republican Lite.

Like I've been saying, in Canada and the U.K., voters vote based on their politics (for the most part).

In America, voters vote based on their intelligence. No rational, sane person could vote Republican today in America.
