I just say guard.

Be fortunate; at least we didn't have to sing that long bullshit or recite that nationalistic creepery the american kids had/have to.

Wow, looking at 'O Canada' on Wikipedia I didn't realise it's only been the national anthem since 1980.

If you don't like the anthem then don't sing it, no one can force you. I for one hate Britain's anthem "God Save the Queen", there's just so many things wrong with that title.

I always stood silent during the national anthem in school. Something about getting everyone to stand and sing a sentimental song about the country reeks of nationalism to me. That god line bothered me as well. I didn't know it had only been the anthem since 1980!!! That makes that line particularly strange. I wonder if anyone protested it. I'm going to have to research that.

Well, last I heard, the original was actually the French version. They just had to make up an English one to go along with the song and sort of make sense, -ish. They don't seem too serious about the 'god' part though, so meh. Picking battles, etc. :levi:

Now while the French version does mention something about a cross, I don't recall anything about any gods in there...

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits! (again, makes more sense than "Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee!", IMHO)

Holy crap was it ever loud in the streets today! Was trying to get back from the airport... for those of you new people from Vancouver, you probably know what I'm talking about! I've finally come across a "SkyTrain party"... Nothing quite like an entire train full of people singing SCREAMING the anthem... :o :drunk:

Canada is a great place for atheists. We've even legalized gay marriage.

You're lucky. My homeland is cursed with two official anthems.

God Defend New Zealand
and
God Save the Queen

Although only the first is ever used on anything other than state occasions.

The music is as bad as the title, in both cases.

England has 1 official national anthem and 3 semi-official anthems.

God Save the Queen (King)
Jerusalem
Rule, Britannia!
Land of Hope and Glory

Rule, Britannia! is the only one that doesn't have god in it, hence my user name.

You forgot "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" - reason on its own to despise English rugby.

It's only the fans who sing that that, the anthem played before games is "God Save the Queen". It's like saying "Vindaloo" or "Three Lions" is an anthem.

Wouldn't Blue Moon also be an anthem then, since it's the unofficial anthem of Manchester City? I would gladly accept that as my national anthem. In fact, I'm tempted to start my own country just so I can make that song my national anthem.

My favourite national anthem lyrics:

"Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the Queen."

Damn Scots!!! :lay:

(More wrong with that then a Ken Ham speech.)
