Canada a more civilised version of America or a more free market version of a European democracy but generally everyone likes Canadians whereever you go in the world unless they mistake you for an American (you have exactly the same accents)

About me: If I had my way I'd buy a few acres of land and an old tractor. I'd drive the old tractor around the land and passers-by would stop to ask me what kind of crop I was farming. "Crop?" I'd say, "Crops are work, I'm planting ideas."

Er...I have a Saskatchewan accent, which is kind of halfway between an Alberta accent and a Manitoba accent. :dono:

LOL... I just noticed this, thanks to the Rev. I was in Florida last week and two of the people on a course were from Alabama - we weren't even close to the same accents, though we had fun about it.

Well, not really.

In the Canadian spoken language "eh" is the singlemost commonly used word, it may appear is speech as either a prefix or a suffix and may appear in speech at almost any point. For example, a Canadian might be overheard to say,

"Hey, eh? What's up, eh? Eh, I mean, eh, what's goin' on eh? Eh?

And no American even knows this word,

Also Canadians pronounce the word "about " "aboot," and no American ever does that.

I can speak with some authority on this because I've lived about half my life in America, where I was born and raised, and half of it in Canada, to which I immigrated for its civility and sanity and low population.

But even before I came to Canada I displayed a Candian flag on my backpack when roaming the world, hoping to avoid being pinned as a Yank and a possible agent of the CIA.

I never did learn to use the word "eh" though and I still pronounce "about" the American way. In fact, when i hang out in a Canadian Pub I'm often mistaken as an American, after 40 fookin' years here!

Canada's a great country and I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. But it is an odd country in many ways, the most pronounced being that it entails a vast geography but has few people, somewhere around 30 million last I checked. That's barely half of the population of Mexico City. Fully 85% of Canadians live within 100 miles of its border with America, so the remaining part is practicaly devoid of humans.

The political shenanigans of our Prime Minsiter, Mr. Harper, don't get much news out here in BC, where we are separated from both him and the rest of the country by the great spine if the Rocky Mountains. Mr. Harper appears to be a big deal from Alberta eastward, but he doesn't amount to a hill of beans here in BC. We kind of go our own way here and there's more influence from California and the US West coast than anywhere east of the Rockies.

Oh Canada!
A crime was committed against us all.

True... Though Americans use "huh" in virtually the same way and to the same or possibly greater extent - though many only realise that when it's pointed out after the "eh"-stuff.
Fact-Man wrote:Also Canadians pronounce the word "about " "aboot," and no American ever does that.
Nonsense - "some authority" or not - since when an American tries to mimic our "about" (their "aboot") and we say "about" right afterwards, anyone hearing the two immediately recognises that they ain't close to sounding the same. We just don't use the American way of "abeooouuuut" (or whatever - lol).

Americans and Canadians can tell the difference between their accents but no one else can and as we are talking about a world view that means they have the same accent.

Same with New Zealand and Australia

Didn't even know about it. But why not - Canada gives so little of this, so I'll try, thanks... if I was American, I'd even have a medal or two, IIRC (not a complaint - just an observation).

Your experience differs from mine, Mr. Jonno - I certainly know Brits (for example) who can easily pick out, say, a deep southern accent v. a Boston accent v. a strong Newfie accent v. many others, though of course some Americans and some Canadians are very difficult to differentiate.

So true
"Another aspect of the particulateness of the gene is that is does not grow senile; it is no more likely to die when it is a million years old than when it is only a hundred. It leaps from body to body in it's own way and for its own ends, abandoning a succession of mortal bodies before they sink in senility and death" -Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene p.34

I feel silly for asking this but weren't the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois going to overthrow the Conservatives? What ever happened to that?
