I signed up because Mechtheist asked me but I am not sure if I will be sticking around.

I was a member of the RD forums because of its large community and spirited debate, none of which it seems I'll find here unless we in turn reshape this forum into an image of our old one. If what I read from one of the regulars about us uncouth scum invading their sacred sanctuary is any clue, I don't think the locals would like that very much at all. Most of the veterans here are from the old OT breakup while we, from what I saw, are mostly from the P&CA forum and probably have very little in common in terms of what we expect from a forum.

I am having a hard time letting go of our old forum. If I decide to go I will miss some of you terribly; I will miss the endless debates about Israel, gun rights and the subtle America-bashing that permeated the old P&CA forum. I will miss the quirky, spirited discussions about sexuality and animal rights. I will certainly miss the overwhelming desire to insult some of you.

Even if we were to create our own forum it will never have a community with the scope that the RD boards had; members would eventually drift away and new memberships would not be able to cope with it leaving us with only a few dozen people logged on at any time and completely bereft of new opinions.

And now I'm depressed.

When we were cast out in the first debacle it was rather scary. The thought of losing contact with all my friends at RDF was no fun. But even after a few bumps at the start a lot of us managed to stay together and this place is now one year old. So there's hope to be found in past history. But if you want to have a "home" where your friends are, you have to help make that home. Here, or in a new place if you prefer, but don't wait for somebody else to get it going. If everybody did that, nothing will ever get done.

Think of it like we do here in Tornado Alley. When a house gets blown away we build a new one. We don't wait for one to grow up by itself.

Hi, Eryemil. Really glad you found us.

I wouldn't go too far just yet in thinking that this is going to be a permanent home for us, although some are clearly putting down roots, and of course I have always considered this place something of a sanctuary. In reality, it's a staging post for the moment, and there are no clear plans at this point for a future direction. The main concern is simply one of making sure that people know what's happening.

In short, stick around for a bit, and ocne the dust settles, we'll work out what to do next.

That sounds reasonable.

I'm honestly surprised by how upsetting this whole debacle has been. I will keep informed of what happens.
