A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

I guess he didn't wear a real crown of thorns because of the risk of injury? As I said in the OP. Correlation ≠ causation. The act of carrying a knife does not magically make one more likely to be stabbed.

I would carry BUT I'm not too worried around here and it is illegal in the UK .Jörmungandr wrote:The Dagda wrote:

I can't imagine not carrying a pocketknife around most of the time. Of course, I view it as a tool much more so than as a weapon, as evidenced by the wear and tear on mine.
Re: Sikh kids should carry knives in school
You need a specific reason to carry one in the UK " It's a handy tool I use a lot and I left it my pocket after work" would only work if you met an understanding cop, and you were in obvious work clothes.Jörmungandr wrote:Feck wrote:I would carry BUT I'm not too worried around here and it is illegal in the UK .

I think if a cop in the UK approached me (as I am in the US), the pocketknife would be the least of my worries.

Re: Sikh kids should carry knives in school
Well that's true but if you're an idiot who lives in that environment and needs to carry a knife the causation is your idiocy and the stupidity your death. Don't get into a culture that carries knives and you probably wont get stabbed, although no one can promise that, some people are just unlucky. Shit happens and then you die. The majority of knife crime happens amongst criminals or those of a recidivist nature, who can say what causes that?Jörmungandr wrote:The Dagda wrote:

Are you trying to say there is no correlation or causation because I think that is erroneous nonsense.

Re: Sikh kids should carry knives in school
There's no doubt that there is a correlation between people who carry a knife and people who get stabbed. However, that is not to say that carrying a life makes you inherently more likely to get stabbed. What causes these people to be more likely to be stabbed is their behavior. If I carry a knife around all day because I use it for work, the odds of me being stabbed are no higher than they would be if I wasn't carrying it. If anything, they're lower, since now I at least have the knife to defend myself with should the need arise through no fault of my own. However, if I'm a member of a violent gang with lots of enemies, and I'm engaging in their activities, my odds of getting stabbed are quite high. I'd probably be very likely to also be carrying a knife, but if I get into a fight with rival gang members I'll likely be stabbed whether or not I remembered to bring my knife with me that afternoon. The Dagda wrote:Well that's true but if you're an idiot who lives in that environment and needs to carry a knife the causation is your idiocy and the stupidity your death. If you carry a knife for self-defence, how you employ it is important. If you draw it at the first sign of trouble you are rather likely to be stabbed.

No disagreement, a little bit of sense factors into it obviously.

Dagda said nothing about correlation or causation. The claim was no more and no less than that "people who carry knives are much more likely to be stabbed than those who don't."Jörmungandr wrote:Correlation ≠ causation.
