An annoying thing

Post by devogue » Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:02 pm

I keep coming across an interesting view that many theists have of atheists.

They ridicule us for not believing in God and hating him as well, something I have seen described as oxymoronic (I know, the oxy is superfluous).

I've thought about this and it's quite simple - I don't believe in God and rather than hating "him" I just find the contradictions in the definition and descriptions of this fictitious character by those who do believe to be bemusing, amusing, odious and silly.

It's the character (which we regard as fictional*, while theists don't) "God" which is dispicable, and the fact that so many people manipulate and exploit people with it and/or think such a character is worthy of worship.

*As RD put it: "The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

I hate that fucking shit. After being bombarded with a constant stream of religious propaganda e-mails by my father's wife, and repeatedly asking her politely not to send them to me, to no avail, I finally sent my father a message and told him exactly what I thought about his retarded religious beliefs. I wasn't pleasant. And I asked him to get the message through his idiot wife's thick head that I did not want to continue receiving her crap, and how would they like it for instance if I were to start bombarding them with atheist propaganda?
His response: "Why do you hate God so much?"

It's their limited vocabulary at work. What they're saying is "You don't have FAITH in God and hate him."

Spot on.

They can't get their heads around the fact that we genuinely see their god as being as fictitious as leprechauns. They think we hate a real thing we don't see as being real.

I always get that question.

I usually reply with: "You can't hate something without first acknowledging it exists. If I said that I hated God, I would be implying that there is a god and that I hate him. I do not believe a god exists so therefore, there's nothing to hate."

It's as simple as this:

1. They're not atheists. They don't know. So they're ignorant for even saying so.
2. They're not atheists. They don't know us. So they're ignorant for even saying so.
3. They're not atheists. They don't know what we think. So they're ignorant for even saying so.

I wouldn't say that we can't hate something we don't believe in, because if we relate this to a movie or a book, you can hate a character in it. Maybe there's a total bitch in a story that really pisses you off. You could possibly hate the character. God is that character (to me). Please disprove this now.

It's because they can't imagine how anyone could really be an atheist, and so assume we're all actually closet theists. It seems impossible in their minds, inconceivable that we could disbelieve in their sky daddy. So they figure the truth of the matter is that we actually hate God.
Similarly, it seems inconceivable to us that theists could actually be retarded enough to believe in magical sky fairies, and so we figure they must all be closet atheists though they won't admit it to others or even perhaps to themselves.
