No, you're wrong. It's talent, Rum, but not as we know it. :tea:

Are you serious, Rum?

The guy is simply dripping with talent, and a rare charisma.

Okay, his delivery is idiosyncratic to say the least, but you can't take your eyes off him when he is on the screen.

No - I *am* serious. I agree he has charisma, but to quote his own reference in the book (a description that cut him deeply) he is 'wooden' in his acting . Way back Spock always drew the eye in my view.

Reading the book it was sheer perseverance and saying yes to everything that was offered him which got him work..plus the balls and brass nerve. Those songs (with the exception of Common People) show breathtaking lack of judgement on an artistic level but they show very big cajones!

I disagree completely.

Spock was pretty one dimensional (it was the nature of the character), so Shatner had to work twice as hard to make the characters work.

As for the songs, I love his take on them - art, especially performance of other people's work, is about interpretation - there is far more originality, thought and honesty in Shatner's mental version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds than in any of Sinatra's safe Beatles covers (Sinatra is wildly overrated). Most music is bland, safe, inhibited - Shatner is none of those things and I think he should be commended for his efforts. He takes the piss out of himself, and he has a great sense of humour but, to paraphrase, many a true piece of art has been forged in jest.
