Is he any good? Or, as Hitchens seems to think, a hack?
Is there for honest poverty
That hangs his heid and a' that
The coward slave, we pass him by
We dare be puir for a' that.

I haven't read the book, which is why I'm asking you people. Anyone read it?

Come on, don't fuck about with me, it's too early and I'm in school.

The Hitch has a bee in his bonnet about everyone.

Eh, apparently it's just bad writing. Since it sold so much, I'm inclined to think likewise, but you never know.

Aye, bad writing never did JK Rowley, Dan Brown or those Bronze Age goat-herders any harm....

The only Swedish crime writer I have read is Henning Mankell.

And he is good. Dour, but good.

Well, I liked the first, quite a lot (Note: I'm a mystery buff, though terribly under-read on the genre). Haven't read the second. I didn't know that Hitchens thought he was a hack, and I don't care anyway. I did enjoy God Is Not Great, at least the writing. Can't remember if I agreed with the guy.

ETA: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2452471-diego That's my goodreads profile. Maybe if you browse through some of my ratings you'll get a idea about what I like and don't like. If it matches up nicely, maybe you'll like the book too.

I hope the Millennium trilogy is worth reading - I've already got the first two and am waiting for the third to come out in paperback. I got caught up in the hype and bought the first two books, but haven't started them yet so I can't say what the quality of the writing is like (and even then, it's the quality of the translation that might be open to criticism).

Got Dragon Tattoo to read on my Kindle and it's terrible. Long-winded, dreary, badly written. Got about a third of the way through and gave up. If ever a book was ferociously in need of a good editor with a red pen, this is it.

The problem, my dear Huxley, is that the editor has been through it.

This is what I like to call the "I know" phase.

"I know it's poorly written, but that's what I wanted!"
"I know it's simplistic, but I wanted something I didn't have to think about!"

This is what happens when you teach the lower classes to read.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

It was so dull I decided to read a book about mushrooms instead. I don't even like mushrooms.
