I stopped reading after the bold.
I can already tell:

Do you realise just how much like a fundie xtian that sounds?

Playing them at their own game is never going to achieve anything. When they say proudly that they have never read The God Delusion and never will, you should reply, equally proudly that you have read The Babble, and the Qu'ran, and the Baghavad Gita, etc. That way, you are arguing from a position of knowledge and they from a position of ignorance.

Actually, I stopped reading also for the fact that I would just get angry if I kept going on. My anger is a loose cannon that turns into an uncontrollable tornado, and I'd prefer that I not get angry.

Far better to learn to forge that anger into something more directed than blind rage.

What would you do if someone that you couldn't get away from cornered you and started spouting such stuff? Get angry? Fly into a rage? As soon as you do, you lose. Remaining outwardly calm and dismantling their arguments with a smile on your face is much more effective.

So let's revise this scenario a little.

You are at a social function with your parents present. There is somebody that you really fancy and that obviously fancies you a little as well. Only fly in the ointment is that this person is in the company of someone else - a huge bear of a man that is captain of the school bullying team and lifts weights with his eyebrows. He is also a fundamentalist, YEC, creotard and starts spouting the kind of crap above. The person you fancy is being visibly swayed by his eloquence but seems unsure and, knowing of your atheism, is looking to see what your response will be.

Do you go for the losing your rag and trying to kick the shit out of this yeti (and losing badly) in front of your parents and potential SO? Or do you try to present reasoned arguments?

As you get older, the number of situations where you are faced with someone spouting shit that you are, for some reason or other, unable to kick the shit out of will increase exponentially. Best to practice alternative methods of getting your point across now.

Well, first, I'd try to reason with him. If that doesn't work after a while and it resorts to flaming and it doesn't stop, then it's time to beat the shit out of the fucking asshole. =w= Or cry. I would be interested in seeing a survey carried out on the percentage of atheists and xtians that have read the babble, cover to cover. I have a sneaking suspicion that our side would win by a hefty margin. Of course, being literate in the first place helps!

I've tried but found it too soporific. I really should try again.

Actually, part of the trouble I have is that I do most of my reading on airplanes. I can't bring myself to read the babble in public.
