Top ten atheist arguments

Post by Rum » Sun Jan 03, 2010 8:33 am

We have had a couple of threads on this but I have just stumbled upon Greta Christina's blog and she lists her top ten reasons not to believe in god(s). They are not new but they are succinct. I am listing them but if you want her discussion in some detail (she clearly likes the sound of her own, admittedly intelligent sounding voice!) then you can see it here (which I recommend, because the headlines need unpacking):

http://gretachristina.typepad.com/greta ... n-god.html

1: The consistent replacement of supernatural explanations of the world with natural ones.
2: The inconsistency of world religions.
3: The weakness of religious arguments, explanations, and apologetics.
4: The increasing diminishment of God.
5: The fact that religion runs in families.
6: The physical causes of everything we think of as the soul.
7: The complete failure of any sort of supernatural phenomenon to stand up to rigorous testing.
8: The slipperiness of religious and spiritual beliefs.
9: The failure of religion to improve or clarify over time.
0: The complete and utter lack of solid evidence for God's existence.

I am perfectly happy with a combination of 1 and 10, with a little dash of the mutually exclusive nature of the worlds religions...

(6 and 7 are really subsets of #1, IMO...)
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

Devils advocate a bit here.

1: The consistent replacement of supernatural explanations of the world with natural ones.
(Only because humans choose to replace the "proper" explanations with their own.)
2: The inconsistency of world religions.
(The one true religion has been revealed, but people refuse to accept it.)
3: The weakness of religious arguments, explanations, and apologetics.
(Humans aren't as good as God at explaining these things.)
4: The increasing diminishment of God.
(Humans have the free choice to accept God or not.)
5: The fact that religion runs in families.
(Education of children in the one true religion at an early age helps insure they follow the correct path. This is done at home first. (Argument for home schooling.))
6: The physical causes of everything we think of as the soul.
(Not sure what that means.)
7: The complete failure of any sort of supernatural phenomenon to stand up to rigorous testing.
(We simply don't have the right sort of tests to confirm the phenoms.)
8: The slipperiness of religious and spiritual beliefs.
(See 2 above.)
9: The failure of religion to improve or clarify over time.
(See 3 above.)
10: The complete and utter lack of solid evidence for God's existence.
(A transcendent being is above our ability to test.)

Gak! I need brain bleach now.

Nice list! Well written.

Though I've chatted with her on my Facebook page I wasn't aware of her blog. Thanks for pointing this out to me.
