Oh sure. There were some things that bothered me, but overall I liked the film. I'm never saying it was a bad film, but just that it could have been easily improved.Elessarina wrote:I will answer points more fully when I am not answering on my phone![]()

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

This reminds me of my roommate. He smoked a joint before we left the house, and another in the car on the way there. He said to me, "Dave, I know you don't smoke, but you really ought to consider it just now."Feck wrote:Must remember to take a nicotine patch to the cinemaGawdzilla wrote:2 hours, 43 minutes.Elessarina wrote:I will answer points more fully when I am not answering on my phone![]()

And I was like, "Huh? Why?" And oh, I do smoke pot by the way. I just do it occasionally, and not twenty times a fucking day every day like him.
Anyway, he explains, "Cuz it's gonna be an awesome film, really amazing to watch."
I was confused. "Um...yeah? Yeah I know. But why does that mean I should smoke a joint?"
"Well because that'll make it that much better."
"Er...how so?"
"Because pot makes everything more vivid, more moving, more...I dunno, it just makes it a lot stronger of an experience."
"Huh," I says. "I dunno, I'm kinda of the opposing view. I'd much rather be clear-headed in order to fully take in a and appreciate what I'm seeing. I don't want my mind muddled by drugs."
"Oh, no," he says, "Pot doesn't muddle your mind. It enhances the experience."
"For you, maybe. But every time I've smoked it, it fucks me up. It'd be impossible for me to concentrate on the film cuz I'd be so out of it."
And he shook his head like I just didn't understand. But when we were in the theater, he sat there the whole time practically catatonic, slack-jawed, eyes glazed. He didn't make a sound; didn't laugh at the funny bits, didn't cry at the touching parts, didn't...didn't anything. In fact I looked over a couple times and it seemed like he was asleep. Yeah. Yeah, that's sure a good way to enjoy a film all right
Oh, the weird thing too is, whenever he smokes a joint, he follows it immediately with several cigarettes. Um...don't they have opposite effects? What's the point of this

EDIT: Sorry. I'm dunk. I just realised I haven't contradicted myself with the first post. I said a film doesn't necessarily need a good script but those films still had a good story. So did Avatar of course. Its the execution of that story which didn't live up to what they did in early Cameron.

Oh and I did remember a better film I've seen this year afterwards. District 9.Animavore wrote:
Oh. Actually I can't really think of a better film this year (it wasn't a great year for film) so they may be right.
Anyway not arguing over something subjective like taste. I've said what I think of the film there's no need to go on. Plus I'm leaving right now for a session. Drinks galore![]()
Laterz. Happy Christmas everyone![]()

Speaking of Cameron films, I just realized I've never seen The Abyss. I need to add that to my amazon cart...

I mean, I said the things I thought needed improvement. Do you expect me to, like, rewrite the script or something

Re: Avatar
How could you give them more depth?1) There was a general lack of characterization. The characters lacked depth.
Fair enough but I don't think there was room / time for more characters and any ambiguity2) The characters were too one-dimensional, too stereotypical, lacking in complexity. There were good guys and bad guys and no shades of grey.
There were some I grant you but not too many3) Too many cliches.
But also someone who hasn't walked for years/ Earth is a shit hole/ he fell in love. But people do change sides - Lawrence of Arabia4) I wasn't sure why our hero changed sides. His conversion wasn't convincing. And he's a very weak-willed and poorly trained Marine if he could change sides that easily.
He's different/ he's a moron / he's exotic - I believe she does tell him why she saved him initially - he has a strong heart..5) I didn't find the main characters' romance convincing. It was obvious what he saw in her, but what did she see in him?
I wasn't convinced that the tree did consider him "special".. I am sure there was a reason for the seeds being attracted to him (maybe something he had touched).6) The main character is special somehow, so special that his specialness is especially noticed by the great trees special seeds. And yet...why is he special? What makes him so, other than that the script requires him to be so?
