Dangerous Knowledge

Post by FBM » Sun Dec 13, 2009 12:58 pm

I've been interested in the limits of human knowldge lately. What can we know, and what is impossible to know? I've watched this in full 2 or 3 times and I still get something 'new' from it each time:

There are 10 of them, but once you've got this one, you can find the others easily on Youtube.
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

Teehee - because I mentioned propagators of uncertainty in the world of science - Georg Cantor, L. Boltzmann and Gödel's incompleteness theorem? Yes, I was referencing this particular documentary!!

Thanks for posting it.

The way they attacked Georg Cantor is the way they're attacking Behe now. Scientists are afraid of intelligent design. In 30 years it'll be accepted fact. Just you watch.

What scientists back then were afraid of was uncertainty, just what theists piss their pants over still. In the past several decades, seems that many/most scientists have been drifting away from claims that they have absolute knowledge about much. They seem to be more careful to present their ideas as 'working models', rather than complete explanations. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. :eddy:

Actually the reason they invented 'Intelligent Design' was to get rid of the certainty of a Christian creator and try make it less certain by saying an undefined, amorphous intelligence. Thankfully the Discovery Institute is such a bunch of incompetents their ruse to muddy the waters was more transparent than... well, non-muddied water.

EDIT: Spelling.

 Am I wrong in thinking that they invented 'Intelligent Design' as a smokescreen for their belief in a sky-wizard and the illusion of certainty that it afforded them?

A bit too much of the 'this stuff will drive people mad' and not quite enough of the maths..not that my maths is up to it, but a bit more theory would have been preferred by yours truly.

Not as far as I can tell... You said "get rid of", but I think you meant "disguise" or "cover up" or something. Eh?

I sympathize, but it would have left the rest of us sitting here scratching our gonads and wondering when it was going to be over. :ddpan:

By means of demonstration, 'delta' is the triangle one, innit? :hehe:

Oh yeah. I meant as in the doctrine of creationism they were trying to push in the school. They got rid of any mention of the Christian creator in their doctrines thereby hiding he certainty aspect. Or something. I could maybe have said it better.
