I remember hearing about the WTC being hit. I was at school in class. Everything going fine and I was doing what I normally do which is to glance at girls legs and then a class mate burst straight into the class room saying an aircraft flew into the WTC. Well I like many others sat there thinking..."Whats the WTC?".

Didn't find out more about it til I got home and watched the news.
Can't remember where I was when I first heard about the london bombings.

I remember the whiff of schadenfreude around Northern Ireland at the time. For decades ordinary Americans had funded the IRA and contributed massively to the mayhem here.

I remember the sense of irony people here felt about the new American icons of anti-terrorism such as the NYFD and NYPD - there was a perception that many members were Irish-Americans who no doubt sympathised with the IRA freedom fighters (terrorists?) during the Troubles here.

I'm not saying this was my view, but it was prevalent at the time here.

Perhaps a derail thread would be in order...

There's a Harrison Ford movie called The Devil's Own about the "American Money". Clancey talked about it in Patriot Games as well.

I also think it is because relatively speaking, the US doesn't have much experience with terrorism on domestic soil. It was a stark contrast with the way London responded to it's bombing in 2005.
We'd had Oklahoma City just a few years earlier, we weren't cherry. I pointed out several times that without Tim McVeigh people would probably be saying "Americans don't do that kind of thing."
It still does not compare to the terrorism threats the UK and Ireland have had in the last decades. Or Spanish Basque.

Very true, and I'm glad of it. I've had enough time avoiding being blown up without having to do when I'm going to Wally-World.

If we called the decade just about to finish the "naughties", what are we going to call the next one?

We could just call it "quits" (after Dec. 21, 2012.)

A dear friend looked me up after ten years out of touch, he visited, then came the following weekend, then asked me to marry him - 6 years ago now.

Then there was Munchkin, not second place but OBVIOUSLY second. She's been the most unexplainable joy I've ever known, I like her, I love her but the bit that makes me smile so much is that I like her.

Oh and I got a new job, which as hard as it's been is tons better than the old one.

Oh and I bought a house went back to school.

Bugger I nearly forgot I also went to Sri Lanka 4 times on the trot! (2002 - 2003).

Yeah - it was a good decade for me.

Sounds like you had a great ten years! Long may that continue!

I think Mrs Rum (not legally) and I met 11 years ago now, so it probably doesn't count. But the last ten have been great years. We get on so incredibly well. We don't fight, always find a way to deal with differences of opinion and accommodate each other's needs. We complement each other too - she is a great organiser detail person and I am a good planner and I am impatient with detail. And we love each other and we are lucky that we get on despite that! Considering I have been divorced twice this is all a true blessing.

I have also been successful career wise. I am as 'senior' as I can get in my profession and I am paid well. The fact that I hate the place that has brought me to is a disappointment, but I can live with that for a time. In a few months my work/life balance should look healthier.

The last ten years have been good to me.

Anyway - enough earnestness for now!

An honest question - why did you feel cold dread and horror when you lived thousands of miles away from the events?

I'm really curious about this because it's something I hear many Americans say.
I remember exactly where I was when it happened, and the spectacle and gravity of the horror of it was compelling. I was glued to the TV like everyone else around the world.

But I think I felt more cold dread and horror right before we went to war with Iraq. I didn't have time to dread 9/11 it was such a surprise, and, we had no idea what the full effect of it would be as the days unfolded. War, on the other hand I had had experience with. And then, we got to hear all the news leading up to war. I literally had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach right before we declared war. It felt like a gang rape by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, Rice, Blair...

Going to war was the event in this decade that affected me the most. Unfortunately, it still affects us and is not past. :(
