Atheists draw wrath over sticker stunt

By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie

Posted 1 hour 23 minutes ago

Passionate atheists in New Zealand are copping abuse for their plan to put giant stickers on the sides of buses advising people to stop worrying because there is probably no God.

The atheists want public donations so they can put the stickers on the side of buses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The stickers read: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

When similar stickers were put on London's trains and buses earlier this year, many religious groups were far from happy.

New Zealand spokesman for the atheist bus campaign, Simon Fisher, told Radio New Zealand that he has received a number of abusive emails.

"Quite nasty ones, along the lines of, 'You're going to hell'," he said.

But Mr Fisher says he is not worried.

"For one, I don't believe in hell, so it's not too bad."

He hopes the stickers spark lots of fiery debate and wants them in place by February.
Oh dear did you hear that we are all going to burn in hell. :funny:

The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

This thread should be stickied... to a bus.

I'm not at all surprised by this story. There are rather a lot of quasi-independent fundamentalist churches in NZ, which is one of the reasons I decided not to move there when I had the opportunity five years ago. There was one in north Auckland that opened a school while I was there: the usual shite, making the girls wear Mother Hubbard dresses and saying that they wouldn't be teaching the theory of evolution. Someone needs to stick it up 'em, but I decided that I prefer Hong Kong, where hardly anyone takes religion seriously [unless you regard the worship of money as a religion].

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. [

It am wicked to mock the afflicted. [

lofuji, have you ever been to Singapore? They have this (I think it is a) depiction of the creation of the world built into a hillside, with concrete gods all painted up and looking like escapees from a Grateful Dead caravan.
