Re: Screw you guys.
Well Quake was arguably "fun". If fun is pointless... well that's a bit sad. But they were held back by the technology. All they could do was give us a fun experience held together with a pointless story, set in a pointless location, with pointless characters etc. These days, the technology is so good that very complex stories can be told through video games, but in a way that no movie can do due to the level of interaction. Some can truly be described as art, others can be used to send political messages, and still (if the game is actually any good), it's fun. If something is fun, I wouldn't say it is pointless. The point of using the product is... to have fun. Is there something that makes video gaming pointless while films and music aren't... or do you feel that films and music are also pointless?
I think you'd really need to play a modern equivalent of Quake and make a comparison. You just ran around shooting things. That simply isn't good enough anymore.

And in the end, you have what you started with. Solitaire writ large.Peter Harrison wrote:Well Quake was arguably "fun". If fun is pointless... well that's a bit sad. You could argue that sport is pointless (at the amateur level) for the same reasons. Some people really do do it just for fun and something to do.
And actually some people do play video games at a professional level and make a nice few quid for themselves. I saw a program recently with a young lad of about 20 who had already made over a quarter of a million.

You can tell complex stories using solitaire? Have millions of people simultaneously interacting with each other in real time, relying on reaction times, tactics, teamwork, communication and leadership using solitaire? Can you make solitaire a thought-provoking experience, handling controversial topics and causing people to think in ways they wouldn't usually compared to experiencing the same stories in films?

Sport is exercise on a competitive level, so that's not bad.Animavore wrote:You could argue that sport is pointless (at the amateur level) for the same reasons. Some people really do do it just for fun and something to do.

There are probably a few million kids in gyms in the US right now, practicing basketball and planning what they'll do when they're in the NBA. Maybe one in a million will make it.

Zilla, you're full of shit. We're all atheists here and as such we know that there is no "point" to anything, ever, other than what we chose to give meaning to. Peter and Ani have given you valid reasons for why gaming is just as important to modern culture as any book, film, sonnet or painting so give up the ruse and stop winding us up

Off course they do. They all kick ass and make bitches, widows, and sexually repressed, socially inadequate victims out of the weak.Peter Harrison wrote:Forgot to ask, do the names actually relate to the classes?Animavore wrote:What do you call your classes?
