Planet of the Apes
Planet of the Apes
So it seems like a new widescreen release is now available. I've been meaning to pick this series up (I saw the first, second, fourth and fifth movies when I was younger.) Am I just being nostalgic or are they as good as i remember them being? And I recall the 4th one not being that good, is the third worth watching (I'll take them in order of course if I end up buying the set as some of the plot specifics escape y memory.)

I thought they would have been all widescreen anyway in DVD format? They were all originally shot in 2.35:1 format.andrewclunn wrote:So it seems like a new widescreen release is now available. I saw this set (including the bonus disc) on sale in HMV a year or two ago, and it was priced a lot lower than this. I assume it's the same product.
I saw all of these one time, many years ago. They were shown late Friday/Saturday night over the space of a few weeks.

Re: Planet of the Apes
I've seen a few collections. Some widescreen, some not. And with people remarking at varied video and audio quality. I want the good stuff for sure, and this doesn't seem too steep for all 5 movies. I'm just not sure whether they're as good as I recall them being, or if I'm just remembering them fondly (I was like 9 or so when I saw most of them.)

They're so far down on my list that I'd never consider any of 'em... but some of mine might be equally far down your list.andrewclunn wrote:... or are they as good as i remember them being?

The first 3 are all pretty good. The 4th and 5th are quite easily missable.

A movie series that went down the tubes after the third instalment. Who'd have thought it? There was a lesson in there somewhere, Mr. Lucas.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:The first 3 are all pretty good. The 4th and 5th are quite easily missable.

Re: Planet of the Apes
Well I do recall disliking the fourth (though it has only a vague impression and the details of the impression are not there any longer) and I haven't seen the third. But since people seem to be claiming that the third was worth watching, I guess I'll pick this up.

I saw the first one in the theater, and was highly pissed. That didn't make the movie any more interesting, however.

I was in a lecture re chimpanzee communication on Saturday and I don't believe that the apes portrayed in Planet of the Aforementioned were terribly accurate.
