European Humanist Federation opposes Blair as EU President.

LETTER SENT INDIVIDUALLY TO EACH HEAD OF GOVERNMENT IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

I write on behalf of the European Humanist Federation, which represents forty-two
organisations in nineteen countries and has contacts in many more. We represent people
who seek to live good and useful lives without religion, and we estimate from numerous
surveys that such people total at least one-third of the population of the European Union.

We are recognised as partners for dialogue with the EU under the Lisbon Treaty (which
would insert a new article 17 into the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU) and we have had
extensive exchanges and meetings with the Commission and its President.

We support secularism, in the sense of neutrality of official institutions as between all
religions and beliefs, including non-religious beliefs such as Humanism. We believe that
whoever is appointed as president of the Council of Ministers of the European Union should
be personally committed to this position in line with the EU’s policy of non-discrimination.

We therefore urge you to oppose strongly any proposal to appoint Tony Blair to this
position.
His speeches make it clear that he sees non-religious lifestances as inferior to
religious ones. Indeed, he actually sees our humanist and secularist beliefs as potentially
dangerous: he claimed last month that “human affairs and the human process of reasoning
are always limited unless they are infused with faith. At times they can even be
dangerous.”1

In August he identified himself unreservedly with the Pope’s words in his recent encyclical
which (as he said) “describes humanism devoid of Faith as ‘inhuman humanism’: ‘Without
God, man neither knows which way to go, nor even understands who he is.’."2

Now in a speech to at Georgetown University, Washington he has equated people such as
us - humanists and secularists who reject religion - with violent religious extremists! He
stated:

“We face an aggressive secular attack from without. We face the threat of
extremism from within. These challenges are not for Muslims alone or
Christians or Jews, Hindus or Buddhists for that matter. They are challenges
for all people of faith. Those who scorn God and those who do violence in
God's name, both represent views of religion. But both offer no hope for
faith in the twenty first century.”3

In our view this intemperate and completely unjustified attack on people who have no
religious beliefs makes him totally unfitted for the key role of President of the Council of
Ministers. We believe that his appointment would be divisive and would endanger the
standing of the European Union in the eyes of a large proportion of its citizens.

I hope you can give us your assurances that you will not support his candidacy.

Yours sincerely

David Pollock
President

President Blair. A truly horrifying concept. The rationale seems to be that unless the EU has as big a crook at the helm as the US and China do, we will lose influence.

Ever feel like you have fallen down the rabbit hole without noticing?

WRONG FUCKING ANGLE. You oppose him for being the worst possible candidate, not for his motherfucking god-bothering.

Fucking humanists.

He'll never get my vote!!! :pissed: ...... Oh, hang on. I'll never have the oppertunity to not vote for him. :lay:

Amazing innit. He promise us (UK) that he'll allow us a referendum on Europe, but broke his promise. Now he could end up as president of Europe. A Lying, unelected, war monger as president!

And Gormless Brown is sniffing up his arse, too. "I'll back you all the way, meine liege. BTW, gizza cushy job will ya, because I'll be unemployed from next year."
