The Aztecs used to sacrifice anything up to 20,000 people a year. That takes some beating, though wars in the name of Christianity, the Crusades in particular, probably notched up a as many. Sacrifice was a 'requirement' of the Aztec religion however and there was apparently a belief that the world would not work properly without it.
