Gee, religion gives people a "warm and fuzzy".

Wait, does this mean that indoctrinating a child is equivalent to giving him LSD?
Is there for honest poverty
That hangs his heid and a' that
The coward slave, we pass him by
We dare be puir for a' that.

No it's worse. It's like giving the kid LSD and telling him what to hallucinate about at the same time!FrigidSymphony wrote:Wait, does this mean that indoctrinating a child is equivalent to giving him LSD?

Actually it really is like that. When I was a believer, there were many times after a prolonged prayer and/or worship session that I had a "high". There were even a few times I had visions and times when the "high" was so profound that I didn't eat or sleep for two or three days. More times than I can count I had people tell me that they could feel the presence of the "holy spirit" around me when I prayed. However, I think now that they were picking up on the extreme calm and stillness that could come over me when I prayed, rather like a meditative state - we are communal creatures and have evolved quite an ability to pick up other's emotional states.CJ wrote:No it's worse. As an atheist, I have meditated - for a time every day. It only took me a few weeks to start having experiences, one of which was profound enough for my teacher to call it a kensho, a first step to enlightenment. Right now, sitting here in the coffee shop, it would not take much concentration for me to induce that high feeling that I used to get from prayer/worship and meditation.
Apparently, I'm just wired that way.
