Mike Leigh Films?

Post by tattuchu » Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:28 pm

I just watched Naked. I loved David Thewlis as Prof Lupin in the Harry Potter films, and wanted to check him out in something else. What an amazing film! Dark and break, heartbreaking and hopeless, yet at the same time very very funny.
So...um...I've no idea who his Mike Leigh fellow is, but if Naked is any indication (and the short film The Short and Curlies also included on the disc), I'm thinking I'll likely enjoy his other stuff. And his other stuff might be...? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Also, any other great roles for David Thewlis?
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Secrets and Lies is excellent. I have heard very good things about Vera Drake too - although I haven't seen it.

Meantime is brilliant - including great early performances from Tim Roth and Gary Oldman.

His early dramas - Abigail's Party and Nuts in May are worth hunting down as well - as period pieces mainly.

I think I am right in thinking his work is all made up as the cast go along..or is that just the way I work... :shifty:

I think he usually uses a lot of improvisation in his scripts. Often deciding on the final script following improv in rehearsals. He is justly famous for his very natural dialogues.
