It just opened today here so myself and the missus twaddled off to see it. It was a very good movie, when compared to the average sci-fi flick it is a league and more above the normal boom bang crap. Yes there were a lot of explosions and the final third had a lot of action but it serves as a jarring counterpoint to the documentary style first half. It was obvious why Peter Jackson was involved as many scenes did enjoy a type of gross-out humour (and I do want a pig firing cannon). Many will accuse it of being a bit heavy handed in it's portrayal of a slightly different blend of apartheid but while it was obvious it never became heavy handed or as completely ridiculous as the real apartheid, there was some, small justification for putting the aliens in the ghetto. Final word goes to the lead Sharlto Copley who starts off as a pencil pushing dick that noone would like to a hero we all root for. Great performance.

Edit: I would also like to reiterate FOCK YOU, YOU FOCKING FOCK
At least I'm housebroken.

D9 was a great film. It wasn't perfect but one of the best sci-fi films and films in general in recent times. It definitely didn't have that hollywood feel to it. Wonderful effects. Superb!

I was loosing important information to the accents, so I promised myself a session with subtitles. (Or, as my five year old niece once said, "subtitties.")

I was actually wondering what kind of accents they were. Were they specifically South African accents native to the locale or was it some other European type accent?

"Educated Afrikaans" to my uneducated ear.

Gawd, I struggled for the first 20 minutes but after that it was fine. As long as you can understand, "FOCK YOU, YOU FOCKING FOCK!"

I had no problems with the accents. :dono:
It was Jo'Burg Afrikaans. (Posh South African.)

I don't remember having any problems understanding the accents but I do know some people do. I don't understand why that is though. I guess it's a very subjective thing? A friend of mine said he had trouble understanding the Harry Potter movies and used the subtitles while watching the DVDs.

I did the same thing to understand Hagrid. "Keeper of Grains and Keys at Hogwarts"? WTF?

Not read the thread but I just saw the film and bloody good it was too! Looking forward to the follow up when 'Christopher' comes back. I just hope the increased budget the sequel will get won't ruin the raw feel of the first one. Having been in South Africa for a while I have to agree that the racist attitudes displayed in the film would be very true to life. I didn't meet a white person that didn't resent the blacks to some extent.

Saw this film over the weekend. Loved it. Sequel better be good or I'm taking a trip to SA.

Yes the first 20 minutes are a tad odd but they set the scene very well.

That's pretty much why I bailed. I didn't want to stumble over something later and screw up the visualization.

Cleverly done. I liked the mix of documentary and drama. The CGI was convincing without dominating the film. The central character was convincingly played and his character's (mental) metamorphosis nicely handled. I also loved the way that so much was left unexplained, especially the ending.

My main criticism is that, apart from Wikus and Christopher, the majority of characters are two-dimensional and generic. A few redeeming features among the MNU guys would have made things a little more believable.

All in all though, a thoroughly enjoyable film.
