People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Actually, it does have subtitles for some of the harder accents... and for the aliens who i found almost impossible to understand.Animavore wrote:Maybe they should've had subtitles for you?Gawdzilla wrote:First, the Afrikaans accent was a bit thick for me.tattuchu wrote:How do you mean, dude? Luckily I know a few S. Africans so didn't have much trouble with that one.

I routinely watch "imports" (and some American) movies with the titles on, to make sure that what I'm hearing is what they're saying.gooseboy wrote:Actually, it does have subtitles for some of the harder accents... and for the aliens who i found almost impossible to understand.Animavore wrote:Maybe they should've had subtitles for you?Gawdzilla wrote:First, the Afrikaans accent was a bit thick for me.tattuchu wrote:How do you mean, dude? Yeah... I quite often go back, turn subtitles on... watch again then turn them off. But for "The West Wing" I had to leave them on pretty much all the time...Gawdzilla wrote:I routinely watch "imports" (and some American) movies with the titles on, to make sure that what I'm hearing is what they're saying.

Watching "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the first time subtitles had to be on.gooseboy wrote:Yeah... I quite often go back, turn subtitles on... watch again then turn them off. What is it with Americans and not understanding foreign accents?Gawdzilla wrote:Watching "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the first time subtitles had to be on.gooseboy wrote:Yeah... They can understand me just fine... maybe my accent isn't foreign enuff???Animavore wrote:What is it with Americans and not understanding foreign accents?Gawdzilla wrote:Watching "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the first time subtitles had to be on.gooseboy wrote:Yeah... Re: District 9?
Maybe. Its just a lot of the time I see American documentaries or what have you and the foreign people would all have accents even when speaking English. Its quite annoying.gooseboy wrote:They can understand me just fine... maybe my accent isn't foreign enuff???Animavore wrote:What is it with Americans and not understanding foreign accents?Gawdzilla wrote:Watching "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the first time subtitles had to be on.gooseboy wrote:Yeah... I bopped around the world for twenty + years, and got used to quite a few languages (fluent in none, of course), but something that sounds ALMOST right is the hardest to follow.Animavore wrote:What is it with Americans and not understanding foreign accents?Gawdzilla wrote:Watching "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the first time subtitles had to be on.gooseboy wrote:Yeah... I think it's out in the UK today. Local cinema had signs saying "No humans allowed".

Re: District 9?
Seeing it tonight. The year started off pretty badly with disappointments like Salvation. But Moon by itself has made me more optimistic for films in 2009. I've tried to avoid the hype of D9 and avoided the websites etc and only viewed the trailer once. Here's hoping it's another good 'un. Keep me going until Avatar (and Where The Wild Things Are).

Re: District 9?
Been to see it and now I'm home. Ace!
Not enough of a review?
Well it *is* mixed. Some of the docudrama bits don't really work and aren't logical. The personal development of the main character is good but he is way too much of a prat at the beginning (won't spoil it by saying why and how). The last third is really predictable but actually very enjoyable! The photography - grainy realism mixed with amazing special effects with a roving camera style - very impressive.
A good 8.5 out of ten - go see it, especially if you like science fiction and even if you don't.

Re: District 9?
I loved it. I found the last half of the film very intense and I could feel my heart beating faster which is unusual for me because even the most exciting action in films doesn't usually make me so tense. I really enjoyed the lead performance. I didn't really like the character much, but he made it pretty believable. I found it easy to imagine going through the experience. Glad I saw it, one of my faves this year. Look forward to seeing what the director does next.
