truth to tell, the Avignon papacy was not all about the king of France leveraging his power... though it's true that the first Avignon pope, Clement V, was Philippe IV's puppet, and the next, John XXII also being French must have been sympathetic to Philippe's successors (and must have done some things that really were not viewed well if I judge by the fact that after him, the name John was never used till after WWII, and even so, successors to John XXIII preferred to use John Paul rather than just John), but there's the fact that at the time, Rome was really not a good place to rule from and the papacy had to flee the eternal city lest incredibly nasty things happen during one of the regular riots and revolts that happened there.

he better not, either of them... Crusades have been out of fashion for centuries, but you never know what could launch a next one, and attacking the pope would be the best way to see how important Catholic culture still is in Europe.
