It's a pity that the reason for action has to be seen as countering a threat from Russia, instead of the fact that global warning is bad for everyone.

Yeah. But in that sense it's framing the issue in a way that aligns with what a lot of politicians already say. In fact, putting countries on a kind of war-footing in the 'fight' against climate change is not a bad approach imo.

I've just a had a new bout of pessimism. Watching warnings about AI becoming a threat to our well being and/or existence. It all comes back to competition over cooperation. Same as military arms races, same as climate change. Made me think we'd be better embracing China and working together for the prosperity of everyone, instead of engaging in a race to the death.

You sound like a commie pussy. When are you people going to wake up and understand the market will solve climate change when the market needs to. Just have a little faith, and in the meantime it wouldn't hurt if you painted the roof of every building white, and invested in cold fusion.

Malawi is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of global heating. They have a 60-year development plan founded on what they call 'climate smart' education. Young people are taught climate science and work with govt and ngo partners in schools to develop local climate responses, disaster plans, and community resilience programs. Young people take that education and action into the community in their everyday lives. The median age in Malawi is c.19 yoa btw.

Contrast that with what's going on in our neck of the woods. There's a kind of fatalism around climate and related issues which says that things can only be as they are - because if they could be different then they probably would be. That's arguing for BAU really. We made the way things are done so we absolutely can develop different ways of doing things; ways of doing things that promote sustainability and resilience based on the kind of long-term planning that secures the viability of natural systems and enhances the well-being of the overwhelming majority of world's citizens - but we have to have the power to do that don't we?
