What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
Hard not to get teary eyed at some of the voice mails transcribed from people on the hijacked planes and reactions in general to what was happening. Very comprehensive. The pace of the quoted conversations and recollections are just relentless, from Dick Cheney down to the smallest page at Congress trying to figure out where to park the giant flag container she was responsible for that day ....running down the Mall with them.
Particularly moving were the calls coming from Flight 93 - they had cell contact and were sometimes conversing with loved ones.
Pretty brave the bunch that forced that crash.

I enjoyed that a lot. I think he's one of the most interesting writers in the genre atm. The Children of Time and The Final Architecture trilogies are cracking good reads.

Lots of space opera, bit of bodice ripper, intriguing mystery.

It's very interesting to read a first hand account right on the edge of the railroad opening Africa often to tribes that had very little contact with the outside world. Of course the maneaters were horrendous but the other stories are also excellent and easy to imagine oneself back just before the turn of the 19th century before war and influenza ravaged the world. Britain at the height of it's empire. Very satisfying read.
Would be a good companion read to some of the histories of Africa and empires like the Shaka Zulu ....their leader a military and social organizational genius on a par with Napoleon....and who nearly defeated the British army. I might grab a few of the relevant books to re-read.

Despite inflicting a convincing nightmare on myself I persist.

Very evocative, irreverant and brutal writer.

Rereading back to back Around the World solo motorcycle adventures....wow have things changed. Making me feel verra old. Covers nearly my whole early motorcycle riding period starting in 1967.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter%27s_Travels

1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60 6. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well travelled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She’d ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She’d survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she’d fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, satnavs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today. Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.
