"Whatever choice you make, it will be perfect!"
That narrows it down a bit.

It reminds me of a link I was once sent, about the Coming New Age. It was a webpage that went on for literally hours, about how those little things you've been feeling are all part of the change. In fact, even if you don't feel the change within yourself, that's OK, because you're not supposed to feel any different - it's all going exactly as predicted. But very soon you'll be on an entirely new level of consciousness.
I suspect I'll still have to wheel the bin up to the roadside every Thursday though.

Well, in any other intelligent species it would have been bred out by now...

Well, shit. I guess I'll drop my plans for grad school and take up bodybuilding and flint-knapping instead.

As watched it the image of an old Larson cartoon flashed into my head.
And I've just found it...

Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Bullseye.

The reason they're not clear or consistent is that they're all made up. The Mayan calendar is cyclical, and 2012 marks the end of the Long Count, their greatest division of time, like a millenium to the Westerns. So, just like at 2000, somebody thinks this is THE time, and decides from poor research and pure fantasy that SOMETHING is going to happen. What, exactly? "Something wonderful." From there you can take it anywhere.
