Like many states in the modern era Israel was founded by rogues of the righteous cause variety. Given its religious/cultural mandate and its adverse geopolitical location (not forgetting the nature of our species) it is understandable that Israel never really outgrew that righteous roguishness. This isn't to excuse (for instance) the past year of righteous brutality but to acknowledge the basis of Israel's zealotry when it comes to self defence.

From that perspective the humane approach equals not immediately killing everybody who might be with or adjacent to enemy forces, assuring that those forces are rubbed out. Instead the scenario following immediately above plays out piecemeal, with an occasional perfunctory nod to respectability.
