Re: Republicans: continued
That sounds a bit silly when you look at the dramatic increase in crossings since Biden took office ie filling coffers may not be accurate given the new situation. Consider that New York wants a billion a year to help, that’s more than half of what Texas gets now…
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Yet more whited sepulchres...Christian and Bridget Ziegler had been rising stars of the Florida Republican party – a charismatic political power duo promoting conservative family values and an agenda to ban any mention of sexual orientation from schools.
Then came revelations the couple had taken part in a threesome with a woman, who alleges she was later sexually assaulted by Mr Ziegler.
The abuse allegations, now subject of a criminal investigation, have rocked the Florida GOP and look set to up-end the Zieglers' careers.
Mr Ziegler's fall from grace is likely to be finalised on Monday (local time), when it's expected the Florida Republican Party will formally remove him from his position as chairman.
Mrs Ziegler's standing as a high-profile activist and ally of Florida governor and presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis is also in doubt.
Pushing the 'Don't Say Gay' bill
Mrs Ziegler was a founding member of Moms for Liberty, a conservative group formed in Florida during the pandemic with an agenda to ban school mask mandates and library books referencing sexual activity.
She formally left the group soon after its inception, but both she and her husband have continued to defend it and promote its agenda. Mr Ziegler even delivered training at the group's national conference last year, NBC reported.
Moms for Liberty members have been fierce supporters of one of Mr DeSantis's signature pieces of legislation, known colloquially as the Don't Say Gay law.

Re: Republicans: continued
https://thehill.com/opinion/immigration ... mmigrants/Since spring 2022, New York City, with a population of 8.3 million, has received 118,000 migrants. Chicago, with a population of 2.6 million, accepted around 15,000. The mayors of these cities have complained bitterly about the burdens this imposes.
But Eagle Pass and Del Rio, Texas, with combined populations of 63,433, have received a total of 347,572 illegal crossers in the first 11 months of fiscal 2023. The officials from these cities say they have exhausted their resources trying to meet the migrant demands for social services, food and housing.
Eagle Pass has one small hospital with 101 beds, and it has to bear $100,000 a month in uncompensated migrant care that the federal government won’t reimburse. The Eagle Pass mayor issued an emergency declaration to get state resources and funding to handle these expenses.
El Paso, Texas, is receiving approximately 2,000 migrants per day. Mayor Oscar Leeser has warned that, “We have come to what we look at [as] a breaking point right now.”
Returning to my earlier post, it’s something of a pita to get into the figures. It’s relatively easy to find how much the feds give, but tracking down how it’s used to help migrants and refugees through programs within states is more challenging. For example, HHS in Texas was supposed to receive around 2.4 billion in 2022, but that’s divided across multiple services all with possible impacts on migrants.

Re: Republicans: continued
It seems like projection has become a standard Republican syndrome. Following their Dear Leader. While James Comer is busy making noises about Hunter Biden's questionable financial activities, he's got some interesting business dealings of his own.
'Oversight Chairman James Comer’s "Legitimate" Shell Company Was Shut Down—Twice'
'Oversight Chairman James Comer’s "Legitimate" Shell Company Was Shut Down—Twice'
As Rep. James Comer (R-KY) plows ahead with his sensationalized impeachment inquiry premised on Hunter Biden’s business dealings, the Oversight Chairman has alleged that Biden’s opaque financial operations merit investigation, and that people who own corporations have a “responsibility” to maintain proper “books and records.”
But a review of dozens of tax, real estate, and business filings in Kentucky and Tennessee indicate that Comer’s own personal “books and records” are opaque at best—and improper at worst.
Those records include the dealings of Comer’s shell company, Farm Team Properties LLC, which the state of Kentucky has dissolved twice for failure to file annual reports—first in 2020, then again in 2022.
[A detailed exploration of Comer's obscuration and various apparent ethics violations related to 'Farm Team Properties LLC' follows.]

Biden weak...Trump in court...Hunter Biden...homeland securtiy...open borders.
Rinse, repeat.
Refusing to work with democrats, the party nevertheless needs to keep the border in the news.
Rinse, repeat.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... mpeachmentHouse Republicans are barreling ahead with their effort to impeach homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, part of a broader effort to make immigration and border security a defining issue of this year’s presidential election.
Unease among some House Republicans over the effort to impeach Biden despite a failure to uncover any evidence of misconduct has appeared to only strengthen the party’s appetite for charging Mayorkas within the constitutional impeachment criteria that he has committed “high crimes and misdemeanors”.
In November, eight House Republicans joined with Democrats to shelve an effort to force a snap impeachment of Mayorkas led by far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. Since then, as the problems deepen and polling shows Republicans with a clear advantage on the issue of immigration and border security, some of the Republicans who initially voted against Greene’s resolution now appear open to impeaching the homeland security secretary.
And contrary to Republican claims of an “open” border, the DHS memo said that agents had removed or expelled more than 1 million individuals encountered at the border in both fiscal years 2022 and 2023, with more removals in 2022 than any previous year. It estimated that the annual rate of apprehensions under the Biden administration was 78%, “identical” to the rate under the Trump administration.
Refusing to work with democrats, the party nevertheless needs to keep the border in the news.

NYT has a paywalled story.
this being a big country, many of the illegals simply think they can get here and then do something without papers. It may be in their plans to apply for assylum, but just working here illegally is preferred to their homelands.Illegal immigration has surged during Biden’s presidency, partly because of the party’s new approach: Many migrants have come to believe, reasonably, that they will be able to remain in the U.S. so long as they can reach the border. Many voters are unhappy about the situation, and polls suggest that it is a problem for Biden.
“Believe it or not, there is something that might hurt President Biden’s re-election chances more than inflation,” Greg Ip of The Wall Street Journal recently wrote.
