The US congress passes a law and it has funding. A year later: republicans refuse to fund anything. Or, they add anti abortion wording or border funding to every bill that comes up.

McCarthy, though, is taking a stronger tone against those holdouts as he aims for a second shot at a GOP-only continuing resolution.

The senate here can vote down legislation that has passed the lower house, and then suggest amendments that are more likely to pass. I don't think they ever offer amendments that have nothing to do with the original bill. But then, we have a functioning parliament.

And if the Senate refuses a supply bill, it can trigger a double dissolution of parliament, where all Senate and House of Representatives seats are up for grabs in a general election. Parties in the Senate are reluctant to do that, because there is a good chance of a voter backlash from people annoyed with putting party political crap ahead of getting on with the job of governing.

Most worryingly for the Democrats, there’s a trend of Black, Hispanic and other non-white voters shifting from Democrat to Republican, and especially from Biden to Trump. There are sociological and historical explanations for this, as well as the strange appeal of Trump himself, but there’s little doubt that Biden’s age and frailty play a role.

Electric vehicle drivers are freeloaders!

Outside the presidential race, some Republicans at both the state and federal levels are proposing to hit electric vehicles with extra taxes, fees and legal restrictions that would have the effect of restraining their growth. In Texas, for example, the owner of an electric vehicle will have to pay $200 a year in additional fees to the state, a move that supporters say will make up for lost gasoline taxes.

Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) introduced a bill last week to impose $1,550-per-vehicle fees for companies that make electric cars and put that money into a federal fund that pays for highway upkeep. The move, she said, would “stop EVs from freeloading.”

Here in Victoria there is already a similar law, an EV road user charge of 2.8 cents per kilometre, which goes to fund road maintenance, normally funded by a levy on petrol and diesel of 42 cents per litre. It is partially offset by a $100 discount on car registration fees for EV's. The process is cumbersome - Bron has to send a photo of the Tesla's odometer every year...

It is currently being challenged in the High Court by some EV owners...

I don't know which 'unproven right-wing smears' you are referring to, but I doubt you were going for clarity or anything.

As to the accusations by anonymous acquaintances of Brand, you are, of course, welcome to accept them uncritically. The corporate media worked hard to find some dirt on the old, self-admitted sex and drug addict. They've invested a lot of time and resources. What a waste if no-one fell for it.

I'll think about how the media treated the Trevor Bauer case, and go ahead and dismiss their current smears as if they are from a known dishonest organization.
