And a former senior aide to the Democratic senator who chaired the Church Committee has also criticized Republicans for trying to make the Church comparison specifically, accusing them of wanting to invoke “Church’s legacy not to push for real solutions … but to obtain impunity for themselves and punish their enemies.”

But underscoring how much the “Church” rhetoric has injected itself into the party’s thinking, McCarthy, during a recent Fox News appearance, tipped his hand toward the idea, saying that “you’re almost going to have to have a Church-style investigation to reform the FBI.”

A spokesperson for the GOP leader didn’t respond to multiple questions about whether McCarthy was endorsing starting a new panel, or just an investigation into the Justice Department and FBI, which is already in the works.

Roy pointed to three other entities that could fall under its purview, in addition to the FBI and Justice Department: Fauci and the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Education and the IRS and money that will let the agency hire new staff. Those are all areas that other committees have indicated they plan to investigate. And while Roy acknowledged that potential overlap, he added, “You still want your best prosecutors prosecuting the case.”

Gearing up for special prosecutor. This will last about 2 years, peaking in the 2024 election to make "Hunter Biden's laptop" the election theme again.

Senate Republicans claim that his appointment may have posed a conflict of interest. Last year more than 30 of them called for a prosecutor to be given special counsel authority to carry out an investigation into alleged “tax fraud, money laundering, and foreign-lobbying violations”. But they have have not produced evidence that it influenced US policy or that Joe Biden engaged in wrongdoing.

House Republicans and their staff have been studying messages and financial transactions found on a now notorious laptop that belonged to Hunter. Having gained the majority, they now have the power to issue congressional subpoenas to foreign entities that did business with him.
Fox News and other rightwing media may relish an opportunity to demonise the president’s son ahead of an election in 2024. But Republicans are in danger of overreach. Trump’s attempt to get Ukraine to examine Hunter’s business dealings led to his first impeachment. His efforts to weaponise Hunter’s troubles in the 2020 presidential election fizzled.

Professional tool Marc Thiessen wrote in the Post today something about how if Trump's behavior was 'irresponsible', then so was Biden's. And yes, he actually did put the word irresponsible in single quotes. I have to wonder what it's like having so little self-respect for oneself that you can do what Thiessen and other "balance" commentators do.
