Trying to be optimistic, one hopes that a combination of repeated vaccinations plus many people being infected with hopefully mild symptoms plus some remaining mask use will mean that covid progressively has a harder and harder time of spreading through a given population.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sat Apr 09, 2022 8:36 amThis annoys me. Herd Immunity is a term used specifically in relation to the effectiveness of vaccination programs intended as responses to contagious infections. When applied to general, non-vaccinated populations herd immunity is simply expressed through the proportion of that population which survive to reproduce, rendering the immunity status of future generations moot.

At the same time, we know that some people and communities, such as our oldest citizens, people who are immunocompromised, and people with disabilities, are at higher risk for serious illness and face challenging decisions navigating a world with COVID-19.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
You've been saying this for two years. Our hospitals are not and have never been overwhelmed. There were never bodies piling up in streets. There are currently 11 people hospitalized with Covid in SMH system. Eleven. There are two (count, em'. TWO) in UCU. And that just means they have tested positive for Covid, not that they are hospitalized for it. So, hospitalizations are not climbing, they're falling. ICUs are not filling up, they're emptying out.macdoc wrote: ↑Fri Apr 08, 2022 10:16 pmGood news based on the science is fine....not a lot of that about. When hospitalizations and ICU are climbing, hospitals unable to support the staff needed even with new beds availables ..how can anyone claim it's over.
Living with it doesn't mean it's over or that easy precautions like masks should be dumped.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/11/florida ... e-us-.htmlJust over 90% of the state’s ICU beds were in use as of Wednesday, almost half of them filled with Covid patients, according to HHS data.
Florida’s death toll is on the rise as well at a seven-day average of 88 daily Covid deaths, up 51% from last week but below the record average of more than 180 deaths per day in late January, according to Hopkins data.
The federal government is now sending 200 ventilators, 100 breathing devices and other related supplies to the state, according to NBC News, to help Florida health officials respond to the record number of hospitalizations. DeSantis said he was unaware of the federal allocation, but local and state health officials had requested equipment from the national stockpile, according to NBC News.

Hospitals across Florida are now being pushed to the limit as the state fights one of the worst Covid-19 outbreaks in the nation, fueled by the delta variant.
The state accounts for almost 18% of new cases in the U.S., according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
Florida’s surge in cases comes as GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to resist calls to enforce mask mandates and other pandemic-related measures.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/11/florida ... e-us-.htmlDuring the past two years, people in both states have suffered losses: family, friends, jobs, corner bistros. The lives of people in both states have been forever changed.
New York vs. Florida COVID-19 statistics
Some interesting statistics are hidden in those numbers:
In early 2021, just as free vaccines were becoming widely available, Florida had far fewer reported deaths (23,671) than New York (37,808). But by the fourth quarter of 2021, deaths in Florida (58,655) had surpassed those in New York (55,282).
In early spring 2021, 29% of Florida residents and 31% of New Yorkers had been at least partially inoculated. Now, the gap is 10 percentage points: 89% of New Yorkers and 78% of Floridians have gotten the shots as of Feb. 22.
Florida recorded more than 1.2 million infections as the delta variant ripped through the state during the third quarter of 2021. New York recorded just 313,000 cases.
During the fourth quarter of 2021, as the delta wave left Florida and headed north, New York recorded more than 1 million new infections, while Florida’s caseload increased by almost 658,000.
Since Jan. 1 this year, as the omicron variant engulfed the nation, Florida recorded more than 1.5 million new infections. New York, 1.4 million.

Never?
Where do you draw the line between stressed and overwhelmed?Hospitalizations in Florida remain well below their highs during the Delta variant surge. But hospitalizations are rising fast: 340% higher in the last two weeks, according to the Florida Hospital Association.
Miami-Dade County, Florida's most populous county, is seeing record-breaking case numbers which have hospitals struggling to meet demand.
The maternity ward at Holy Cross Hospital was forced to close due to staffing shortages. With new hospital admissions in Miami-Dade up 550% in just two weeks, the need for health care workers will only increase.
Tell someone who said there were.
Good for Sarasota. As of the 8th of April, the 7-day statewide average was 112. Not a lot compared to the 3,608 late in August to be sure, laklak wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 1:14 amThere are currently 11 people hospitalized with Covid in SMH system. Eleven. but that leads me to the next question; Florida has experienced four major and two minor peaks of Covid cases and Covid deaths.

What do you know nobody else does indicating there will not be any more of them?

200 ventilators and 100 nasal cannulas? To a state with 23,000,000 people? Thank god the Feds stepped in or we'd all be fucking dead. And Trump saved us, well glory.
Look, I get it. You gotta double down now because you've been defending the indefensible for two years. You've been locked down to within an inch of your lives, your most basic rights were restricted, controlled, and abridged, you were treated like medieval serfs by your betters, all justified and accepted because of "the science" and "the greater good". The science that predicted the end of the world as we know it over and over again, yet here we are, fat and sassy.
Anyway, makes no nevermind, y'all gonna do you and we gonna do us.

Oh for FFS I've had 3 days of lockdown for one local case in two years Lak in a region that normally has 3 million tourists a year.
Not even any masks needed until late December cept in the docs office or the old folks care home.
Other cities in the south of Aus have had long lockdowns but of course the numbers speak....1/ 10th the deaths of Florida for a country with 20% more population.
Is saving perhaps 40,000 lives worth locking down Melbourne for 217 days....Scotty from Marketing thinks so.
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-n ... e-election
So do I tho him claiming credit for it is a bit much since health is a state responsibility to a large degree.
The restrictions on travel are mostly lifted now, as Omicron and especially BA-2 has proved near impossible to contain and fortunately is a mild disease for most.
We'll see how China does maintaining its Great Covid Wall.
I have my doubts.....but THEY at least know it's not over.
