Housing costs are way out of whack

Singpore's solution

what struck me was the 80% living in public housing.
Singapore also has an extensive public housing system, with close to 80% of its residents living in property subsidised, built and managed by the Housing Development Board (HDB)

Mixed economy and only socialism if you think every other fucking thing like water, police, parks, schools, roads, the legal system and defence is socialism.
Some things should not be open to speculation and predation ...shelter is one of them.

Life is a lottery. Don't know when you are born whether you are going to be born with wealth or standing, or to be a loser living in a tent on the edge of town. Seems fair to me, so far. Although a reasonable safety net for if I fell on hard times makes sense. Not because I'm a commie but because I ain't a commie. And a safety net makes sense for those reasons.

You don't know where you're going to be born, but your parents do.

or to be a loser living in a tent on the edge of town.
so you equate those two ? You must be a loser because you are living in a tent on the edge of town? :ask:

It's a valid alternative lifestyle.

But yeah, housing is a bit out of whack at the moment, particularly here in Florida. I'm not complaining, I mean we've done well in the housing market. Could have done better if I had steelier nerves, but we still did OK. But it's at a point that ordinary folk will be hard pressed to ever own a home of their own. We're not as bad as California but the gap is closing. Government subsidized housing is the only real way forward, as much as that offends my Libertarian mindset, but needs does. Unfortunately, public housing is really, really, really shitty in most states, and that's unlikely to change, because government can't do anything as well as private industry. Unfortunately private industry is full of selfish, greedy slimeball developers, and that's not likely to change either. I don't know what the answer is.

One small ray of hope is the popularity of "tiny houses", particularly among the younger generations. We were planning on developing a small home community up near Asheville along with my daughter's ex, 10 acres with about 30 small homes (around 60 sq meters or so) with lots of common areas and amenities, but when he became an ex those plans fell through and we invested the cash elsewhere.

Florida's population is predicted to more than double in the next 10-15 years, Texas and Florida will be the two most populous states as people flee the dystopian Blue shitholes (Make America Florida isn't just a pipe dream now, y'all), so it's only going to get worse.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I think China has had five landlord rebellions over the centuries....world might be up for one soon enough.

I got out after reading this
NEVER before have real house prices risen so fast, for so long, in so many countries. Property markets have been frothing from America, Britain and Australia to France, Spain and China. Rising property prices helped to prop up the world economy after the stockmarket bubble burst in 2000. What if the housing boom now turns to bust?

According to estimates by The Economist, the total value of residential property in developed economies rose by more than $30 trillion over the past five years, to over $70 trillion, an increase equivalent to 100% of those countries' combined GDPs. Not only does this dwarf any previous house-price boom, it is larger than the global stockmarket bubble in the late 1990s (an increase over five years of 80% of GDP) or America's stockmarket bubble in the late 1920s (55% of GDP). In other words, it looks like the biggest bubble in history.

I chose to keep a business running and employing people as I detest the consequences of predation on shelter.

Social housing does not need to be demeaning or second rate. Universities house students all the time and in many countries retirement homes are excellent tho they can be exploitative as well.

Social housing can be successul

Which country has housing for all

Finland introduced the “Housing First” policy in 2008. This Northern European country provides apartments for anyone who needs one as a long-term solution to homelessness.

Which country has the best housing system

Austria has the best housing system. Its capital and most popular city, Vienna, holds one of the world’s strongest social housing portfolios and systems. Its supply-side subsidisation only helps the lowest-income families while the transport-oriented developments, Aspern Seestadt comprises more than 10,000 affordable and high-quality residential units. Housing cost in Vienna has remained around 25% of their income and they have largely avoided house price inflation.

Even some corporations have woken up to the unfolding disaster in housing and provided speculation proof houses that staff can build equity in but cannot flip.

I'm sad for so many hundreds of thousands of fixed income and working poor and even lower middle class that are finding shelter simply impossible to come by.
Something gonna break.

Libertarianism was always a pipe dream as it is the cannot acknowledge society.

However it may well work on a boat in international waters

I have a strong anti-authority streak and respect for individual rights and in particular the rewards due to ones own inventions

I just don't like predation, humans behaving badly to others...of any sort. :read:

Then you don't like humans. Shitty behavior is the norm.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Fair enough...bit of a streak of that... but appreciative of institutions and laws that mitigate those impulses ....regrettable as the need is.
I'm also not entirely convinced you are correct in that assertion.

One of the problems is that voters don't want house prices to go down. Governments don't have an incentive to do anything about the housing price boom.
