Vaccination: mandated and/or incentivised

Post by JimC » Sun Aug 01, 2021 12:02 am

In the Coronavirus thread, I have made some posts on the topic of whether governments or companies will require people to be vaccinated to access certain services, or how governments may provide incentives for vaccination. I thought this topic deserves its own thread. Here is an article from the ABC speculating about possibilities in Oz, referencing the latest Biden administration moves for Federal employees:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-01/ ... /100337528
Maria O'Sullivan, an expert in public and human rights law, said the government was within its rights to introduce requirements for vaccination if it was necessary.

"With any law, it has to be necessary and reasonable and proportionate," she said.

"[But] the government has a duty to protect people."

She said factors that could influence whether it would be necessary and fair included whether workers were in a setting that presented a high risk of transmission, and whether workers were required to be in close contact with people who were highly vulnerable

From the above article:
In Australia, Qantas called on the federal government to introduce mandatory vaccination for all aviation staff, arguing it was needed to create the safest environment possible for travellers and staff.
The safest environment possible for travellers and staff would be to require all travellers to be vaccinated as well.

I think we are heading in that direction, of requiring proof of vaccination for a variety of activities, such as airline travel. However, it would be difficult to insist on such requirements in Oz until everyone has had the opportunity to be vaccinated - we are months away from that...

It will be interesting to see what the mixture of requiring vaccination proof is between governments, and private enterprise (such as airline companies). For such companies, the safest bet would be if the government gave some form of imprimatur to such actions, formally or informally.

Requiring vaccination proof from Joe Citizen for certain activities is one thing. Mandating vaccination for certain occupations is another. The Biden version is interesting - not so much compulsion, as serious pressure. Federal employees need to be vaccinated, the alternative being a rather tough regime of continual testing and mask wearing.

Then there is the question of incentives. A tax rebate for vaccination is one possibility, I suppose...

I reckon those unvaccinated (without good reason) should pay a higher Medicare levy.

I think they should just die.

I mean, srsly, why not? They've had every fucking opportunity, you can walk into any drug store and get a jab absolutely free, no waiting, there's really no goddamn excuse. If you don't want to be vaccinated because of 5G or the Mark of the Beast or whatever then fair play, but I'm no longer willing to inconvenience myself because there is a subset of the population too fucking stupid to avail themselves of the only thing we can do to end this bullshit.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Well yes, they may well have a higher chance of mortality (and I'm not averse to reducing the number of Trump voters), but you've missed the main point. The higher the overall percentage vaccinated in general, and specific public roles (like healthcare workers) in particular, the safer everybody is. So, it is in the interests of the whole community for the vaccine reluctant to get their jab. I've basically been arguing that we should be adopting some clever combination of the carrot and the stick to achieve that. There will, of course, be a hard core of fanatical anti-vaxxers, but hopefully their numbers will be too low to prevent the achievement of effective herd immunity.

We'd already have herd immunity if we'd culled about 40% of the herd.

Just sayin.

I'm fine with Republicans jumping into an active volcano, but the problem with contagious diseases is that they are, you know, contagious...

We need to put the unvaccinated on their own islands.

Leper Island. New Zealand had one too.

Canada nailed a couple for $20 in fines for fake vaccination certificates and breaking quarantine.
I'm sure there is a thriving trade in fake vac docs,

Needs tieing to passports tho that won't help much in the US ... :nono:

A robust form of vaccination certification would be required in future, perhaps accompanied by a rapid antibody test...
