Some clothes already are carrying RFID. Possibly soon most will be doing the same--they can tell the internet connected washing machine what sort of wash cycle they need. If they also allow people to find and help other people, so much the better, right?Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:40 pmThe wireless bra! An egg tray for you fridge that calls your mobile phone to tell you when you're running low on eggs. How did we ever live without this before?

Probably because it would be cheaper to get information back and forth between operators and parts of the system, compared to a dedicated series of connections separate from the internet...Tero wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 1:06 amWhy connect gas pipeline to internet?

Re: Why is everything connected to the Internet?
It really is penny-pinching. For an operation of that size I don't think a dedicated intranet (with no actual connection to the internet) would be prohibitively more expensive, even including whatever added time and inconvenience it entailed for the operation as a whole. Considering it's such a vital part of the infrastructure of the country, there's no excuse for leaving doors into it. Yeah, they've got their security team and they may be the best in the business. They're not infallible, and the 'threat environment' is constantly developing. The other employees of the company going online for work are a significant security risk as well. I don't doubt that they considered it and decided to go with the less expensive route despite the risks.

So one company hacked, another pipeline shut off by government decree, and now Tim Pool has hints of conspiracy...
There were stories leading up to these events, which claimed there would be fuel shortages this summer, and then these two events.
The conspiratorial murmurs start when it is realized that the government gets to manage truckers differently now. Used to have limited hours on drivers, but that rule just got massaged, so that they can be worked longer.
Truckers should like that. They haven't ever stopped working longer, but it is SUCH a fuckaround to get the reporting to look right after those long days.

I did some quick Googling and it appears there are systems that allow automated control of gas and oil pipelines. I think you may have that right.Svartalf wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 9:58 amTo monitor the flow and let engineers control it remotely without having to build up your own comm network?Tero wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 1:06 amWhy connect gas pipeline to internet?

Re: Why is everything connected to the Internet?
my treadmill was connected. Then an update failed, and it took me a couple days to exhaust their 'tech support' and go into the Android end, reinstall their whole thing.
I left it at the factory settings, and disconnected it from the internet.
It almost seems like it is FAR better to keep most things off the 'auto-update' stream.
