Re: The Coronavirus Thread
But surely they can't work in the winter months. You'd die of exposure if you had an accident and had to remain outside motionless for more than an hour or so.

Government, mainly. (if counted by numbers)pErvinalia wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 2:18 amWhat the fuck do you people do in such an extreme environment? What's the industry that's there attracting workers?
Exploration and resource development, as JimC says, if counted by other values. At least I think. They hunt diamonds here.

They pump lakes dry, build mines down the kimberlite pipes adjacent, and process out all the diamonds.
But I don't think that's the valuable stuff. I think diamonds are just the game, enabling the players to muck around the 'board' here, as it were.
The real valuable stuff will be a bit...um...rare...and maybe a bit radioactive.
Diamonds are pretty, but not as useful as they once were. The real valuables are likely to be rare earths, uranium and cold-weather specialists who can support exploration in such areas.

I don't know why anyone would choose to live in such inhospitable conditions unless they were getting paid a shitload.

Perhaps surprisingly, this is one of those gulfs, where you won't be able to get it, I suspect.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 3:49 amI don't know why anyone would choose to live in such inhospitable conditions unless they were getting paid a shitload.
It's fucking beautiful here. Cold, hard and forbidding, almost ALL of the world has stayed firmly away for centuries, because it is FUCKING expensive to operate here.
Think of thecost of failures. You have remote mining in Australia right? What would happen if a truck failing meant a driver was about 20 minutes away from frostbite, few hours from death by exposure. Do you think work would end up looking a bit different?
Everything here is much closer to 'untouched' than everywhere else I've been, and with recent advances in tech, there really isn't any reason to be bothered by the cold anymore. From advanced fabrics to modern insulation practices, tech has made everything MUCH easier.
But most of the assholes don't know it yet.

As scientists learn more about the role played by ventilation in the spread of COVID-19, some are starting to focus on how improving air quality can provide better protection.
Airborne transmission of small particles has increasingly been recognised as a source of coronavirus spread, prompting experts to call for a rethink of indoor ventilation.
Now, a South Australian clinical trial of ultraviolet (UV) air treatment to destroy the virus mid-air has secured $1.3 million in federal funding.

They're doing it all wrong. The UV light needs to be inserted into the body.

Not to mention singlet oxygen. She said she had some "reservations", including around whether the technology would create "radicals" — unstable atoms that could damage cells.

my mother in law is in the next group, she is over 90
however, at the same time her assisted living place, the one she can afford monthly with what she got from selling a rural house, went into bankruptcy
(she has a studio apartment)
