Did you just play the "Facts don't care about your feelings!" card Hermit? I guess those Shepiro and Paul Joseph Watson videos are beginning to sink in, eh?
Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

No. Facts are incapable of caring. What they signify is often debatable. I played the "Substantiate your opinion with convincing statistics" card. Whatever facts Scotty might eventually come up with will have to show that the conclusion based on the facts I quoted is wrong. The best he has managed is that the pandemic spiked in the Netherlands beginning in December. He puts it down to new government laws regarding masks being imposed on the first of that month. One problem with that is that Scotty argued several days into December that this law was yet to be approved by the upper house. Another problem is that the rate of infections began dropping on the 21st of December. Would that be because the new law was abolished? That would be weird, because it has not.

Our largely urban county, with mask and other mandates has low rates in comparison:

The same goes for the overall case rate. Statewide, Lancaster County has the lowest case rate in the entire state at 6,895 cases per 100,000 residents. If Lancaster County had the same rate as Douglas County, it would add an additional 6,300 cases in Lancaster County. If Lancaster County had the same rate as Hall County, it would add an additional 8,300 cases.

https://www.1011now.com/2020/12/29/lanc ... e-working/

Still, 300 people without symptoms walking ariund every day. Many with noses sticking out of masks. If one is infected, the mask really does something.

For protecting yourself, only the K95 mask now available will protect you. If I were 75, I probably would use curbside pick up of groceries. I see too many grannies in the stores.

You cant compare any country to another which is why Hermit's pissing contests up the wall are useless as only your shoes get wet.
Sure you can. Policy makers do it all the time and rightfully so. If we believe this assertion, then the US healthcare system, with it's egregious inequality and cost, is just a natural function of the country's character. Comparisons to other countries put the lie to that, and provide support for American reformers.

As for Hermit's numbers, the order of magnitude difference between Australia, New Zealand, and Japan's numbers and those of other countries is very hard to attribute solely to national differences. Without strong evidence to the contrary, he's right that their policies have the situation under control when compared to other developed countries.
Never mind Joe keep sucking on that tit. Just learn a bit how governments deal with their data especially the US government. It is all political.
In other words, Hermit is right and you have no evidence to the contrary. :bored:
He has no evidence to support his claims which he is making. I suppose you are involved in the pissing up the wall contest as well.
Uh Scot, you were the one making the claim. Don't you remember?
Bloody Ozland and Fernland are so far away but even they cant control it with the present regimes of lockdown and mask wearing...
Of course you didn't provide any supporting evidence and Hermit showed numbers that contradicted your claim. You still haven't shown any evidence to support your opinion and mocking Hermit doesn't count. He has demonstrated and I have confirmed that the difference in numbers between countries indicates your assertion is baseless.

But go ahead and tell me to "keep sucking on that tit" and "taking the kool-aid" and I'll keep regarding your opinions as unfounded nonsense until you do some actual work to support them. :coffee:

Sex was one of the causes of Australia's second and by far most deadly outbreak. Victoria's Premier made the mistake of hiring private security firmss to enforce isolation measures in public housing compounds where clusters of new infections were found.

Once that problem was fixed, strict lockdown measures including travel restrictions, curfews, distancing and mask wearing were properly enforced and it did not take long for the infection rate to decline. Most of the restrictions have been progressively lightened, then abolished when the second wave had been brought under control. Between 3 October and 11 December there were zero new infections in Victoria. Since then the highest number of new infections was 5 (12 December) with the total for all other days ranging from 0 to 3.

Before the second wave of infections commenced, the death rate was 6 per million inhabitants (105 fatalities). By the time it had been beaten, Australia death rate was 35 per million inhabitants (about 900 fatalities). It was almost totally confined to the state of Victoria, and most of that in Melbourne. To date 820 of Australia's 909 fatalities and 20.3 thousand of its 25.7 thousand positive tests happened there.

Three new clusters, totalling 257 new infections since 18 December have developed in Sydney, New South Wales. I expect new spikes starting soon all over the nation after the Christmas/New Year celebration. We too have a share of morons who don't believe isolation, distancing and masks matter.

Almost nobody in my local government area wears masks, which is not particularly surprising. 4 infections have been recorded here in March, 1 in July and 0 since then. We do observe distancing measures. There are screens at and between checkout stations, which are frequently disinfected, disinfectant devices at all entrances and markings every 1.8 metres on the floors. I am confident that just about everybody will wear masks if or when infections begin to appear around here. I have 50 of them stashed in the glove box and another 150 in a kitchen cupboard. They won't protect me from being infected myself, but they will greatly reduce the chance off me infecting others if I turn out to be infected myself and don't know it. It's the right thing to do.

This is why it works:

Of course I will isolate myself completely for two weeks if I find out that I got infected.

Bring back all the bad news you want, now. That nurse getting laid is revitalizing. Might be the first good-news story I've heard about this...

Of course some folks will still have their focus on what they focus on, but I prefer hope, love and the slippery, illicit bang I suspect, from a careless read of a screenshot of a twitterer.

If it is numbers you want I can give you any amount as good as those quoted because they will be as much worth. Basing opinion on worthless data has been the name of the game around here as I said many moons ago. The way data is collected or statistical methods used have never been agreed upon. In many cases countries with small populations always come of worse when quoting cases or deaths per million.
There is no legal international agreed definition on what a Covid 19 case or death is, or even how long a death after initial positive testing can be attributed to Covid. There has not been any field trials carried out as to the effectiveness of mask wearing. There has been no international agreement on mask wearing use. You cant compare countries as no two are the same for a whole host of reasons.
All Hermit has done is hold a pissing up the wall contest and getting his shoes wet. For once his adopted country appears on paper to be a good boy in class.
At the end of the day extreme measures were imposed where as greater thought should have been given to the way to apply them.
If you believe worthless data especially out of the US where even neighbouring counties collect data differently keep drinking the kool-aid.

Astra Zeneca vaccine likely 70% effective:

“The low dose/standard dose regimen, although it has been quoted to have an efficacy of 90%, this is confounded by the fact that the interval between the first and second dose was quite long,” Pirmohamed told a news conference.

“And we feel that that result may be related to that interval, rather than the dose itself,” he said.

The UK’s Covid-19 vaccine chair, Wei Shen Lim, said a single dose of Oxford/AstraZeneca’s vaccine was around 70% effective from 21 days until a second dose was given.

No Scot, all Hermit has done is dispute your claim in a reasonable and convincing way. The US cases per million is 53 times that of Australia according to his numbers, and his numbers check out with other sources. Even if there is some inaccuracy due to collection and classification methods, the magnitude of the difference suggests that Oz has the virus under control. Now if you can demonstrate the differences you cite are significant, you'd have a case. As it is, all you have are unsupported claims, regardless of how many moons ago you made them.

As for US data, you're welcome to your opinion, but the fact that you mistook the US Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis for a right wing think tank rather detracts from its credibility. :hehe:
