So, Cunt, where's your science degree from?
Same place you got your manners, when dealing with those who disagree.

Have you read the Great Barrington Declaration? Or do you just swallow the product of corporate p-hacking?
Why should I listen to anything coming from an ignorant person with no science background when I can (and have) read hundreds of articles by a variety of highly qualified climate scientists, which I can interpret via a science degree and 40 years of teaching senior maths and physics?

Do you know the difference between low and high frequency infra-red radiation, and its importance in planetary heat balance?

What about the concept of resonance frequencies of molecules such as CH4 or CO2?

And the "Great Barrington Declaration" is a load of crap, simple as that.

No one on this forum has any interest whatsoever in your false and ignorant views concerning any topic with a connection to science. The forum is always better off when you are absent.

Oh, so you are an educator. Very sciency!
Dr. Kulldorff works on research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the non-profit Fund for Public Health in New York City, some of which is related to COVID-19. He has never accepted or received any funding from pharmaceutical companies, nor from any other large corporation.

Dr. Bhattacharya research funding over the past 22 years of his career has come almost entirely from grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Agriculture, and participation on contracts with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) via a government contracting research group, Acumen, LLC. He has never accepted or received any funding from pharmaceutical companies, nor from any other large corporation.

Dr. Gupta’s research funding over the last 30 years has principally been through fellowships and investigator awards from the Wellcome Trust and the European Research Council.  She has also received funding from the UKRI, the Royal Society, the Leverhulme Trust, the Emily and Georg von Opel Foundation and the Oxford Martin School. She and Dr. Craig Thompson have developed a novel method for producing a universal influenza vaccine (derived from a mathematical model) and this has now been licensed and is going through early testing. She does not hold any consultancy contracts or stock shares in any commercial company.
Load of crap, eh?

I'll listen to you, too. But I'll be considering your bias, and their declared conflicts.

Maybe you can change my mind. After all, you ARE an experienced educator.

So far, I just feel bad for you, for not knowing what you are talking about. You could have just admitted you hadn't read it, and thought it was about climate change...

I value yours a bit higher, to be honest.

But the Barrington thing isn't my opinion. Dismissing it the way you did says a lot more about you, than it does about the authors, signatories or the declaration itself.

If you could see past your hate for me, you might forget that I found it, and read it on its own merits.

Happy Chrismas, JimC. I really hope you get the best family, food and presents today. And a fun wood project to bite into. I can want all that for you, genuinely, even though I disagree with your take on this, and many other science matters.

I've given up.

People who really care about this virus, will have already taken measures to improve their risk factors anyway. (in a year, a diligent careful person can drop a hundred pounds, and train from couch to marathon levels)

...unless they don't care about hospital capacity, risk to health care workers etc.

Nice bunch of cartoons Hermit.
I thought so too, but then our member from Yellowknife pointed out that people use 'science' (note scare quotes) to push human division.
People use anything to push that division. Climate change, killer virus or skin-colour riots, they'll use whatever works.
But only those who claim that climate change and racism exist, or that social distancing and mask wearing slows the spread of epidemics, right?

That's an entirely credible assertion. Scientists only do it for the money. But only the ones that say global warming is a problem. They are corrupt, I tell you. Corrupt! If it were not for the funding by evil forces who use the global warming rubbish to make money and rob us of our freedoms, they'd be out of their jobs. Just as well their lies have been exposed.

If you want to review the Great Barrington Declaration, you might see there is more than one scientific perspective on dealing with the worlds problem.

Of course, you might not have been told about it by your censored media.
Of course I've heard of the Great Barrington Declaration. Our censored media prevented us from ignoring it. They did not just keep making me aware of its existence, but also either reprinted the letter in full or linked to its original site where I could read it.

And a great letter it is too. It was signed by epidemiology experts such as "Mr Banana Rama", "Dr Johnny Bananas", "Dr Johnny Fartpants", "Dr Person Fakename", "Harold Shipman", "Professor Notaf Uckingclue", and "Prof Cominic Dummings" and a great number of concerned citizens.

Well, it would have been a great letter had it not relied on herd immunity when it advocated "Focused Protection". Herd immunity is a batshit crazy idea, as we are about to be reminded of again when the infection rate starts spiking a couple of weeks from now. It will happen in all countries where Christmas is a thing and boxing day sales traditionally cause uncontrollable crowds to crush into shops. Of course very few people in younger age brackets die from the infection they will acquire there, but when they return from their parties and shopping binges they will pass the corona virus on to those who are supposed to be isolated by "Focused Protection" on account of their greater likelihood to die from it. "Focused Protection" has a major design fault. See if you can spot it.

You are quite convincing, but I think back to what you've said, and how your political beliefs might affect your words, and well, I gotta say I still believe Dr Fartpants et al over you. You might be actually de-convincing of the position you argue for.

But Happy Chrismas. I hope you have a great one.

Or they stop paying.

If you want to review the Great Barrington Declaration, you might see there is more than one scientific perspective on dealing with the worlds problem.
...
Lots of scientists have lots of different perspectives and opinions on the things they study. If they're serious about their ideas then they'll expose them to a much wider community of informed individuals who'll attempt to show how the ideas are or might be wrong. Through this review process ideas are tested, revised, rescinded, reformulated in response to additional input, tested again, and so on, until the idea is dropped, or until judgement is suspended awaiting new info, or occasionally until a tentative consensus is formed within those wider groups of experts. Some of these experts will then probe into the matter further in an attempt to show how the ideas are wrong or incomplete, and in so doing discredit or perhaps secure the general consensus. This process never stops because at each stage the review cycle exposes what remains unknown as well as what can be said to be known about this-or-that.

Now, if you really think that s scientist earning a wage for their efforts is a bad thing, something that corrupts both them individually and scientific endeavour as a whole by forcing researchers to unduly prioritise pleasing their paymasters, then what's your alternative?

It hasn't convinced our member from Yellowknife of anything. The Great Barrington Declaration has just provided him with a hook to hang another troll on. To wit:

We have discussed this thing in detail on here. We have laughed about the video of the signing of the declaration by three idiots celebrating a signing of a document and happily smiling and cheering each other sipping champagne while fake applause and fake camera clicking is played in the background. While people are suffering from both the disease as well as the social upheavals caused by it and the necessary measures to fight it.

This is how you recognize scientists that don't do it for the money.... They celebrate with champagne in a building paid for by wealthy industrialists.

Bad news for Scotty: virus expert has been collecting data half a year and masks work:

Signs of the virus were in such tiny particles, he worried it that nothing less than the most protective masks could stop it.

Soon, though, studies showed that even simple masks were able to reduce the amount of virus that gets out into the air, cutting the risk of transmission. Suddenly mask-wearing became an ordinary—if politically contentious--part of everyday life.
