A new, potentially more infectious variant of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has been found in Britain in cases linked to South Africa, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock says.

"This new variant is highly concerning, because it is yet more transmissible, and it appears to have mutated further than the new variant discovered in the UK," he said.

In other news, Facebook deleted Pete Evans' account. It's permanent.

Evans, started as a pizza cook. He became a media celebrity when he landed a job in a TV contest series named My Kitchen Rules. He landed a very successful contract publishing several cookbooks and had several other promotional projects going.

Lately, things have fallen a bit apart from him. Facebook kept deleting posts in which he opposed covid vaccination. He also marketed his own cure, a $15,000 biocharger. In April Australia's medical watchdog, the Therapeutic Goods Administration fined him $25,200 for claiming that it worked. In November he tweeted this:

"Sincere apologies to anyone who misinterpreted a previous post of a caterpillar and a butterfly having a chat over a drink." It convinced nobody, especially since it followed this reply to someone going by the name of Woe Xman:



His publisher cancelled his contract, bookshops and all supermarket chains pulled his books off their shelves and manufacturers relabelled the products he helped to promote. And now Facebook has pulled the plug on him. I guess from now on he'll keep company at Parler with our member from Yellowknife.

That's the big question. I read that medical scientists were cautiously optimistic that they would work on the first new strain in London, hopefully also for this second one. Vaccines seem to involve the virus "spike" one way or another, and if its structure remains the same in any new strain, then no problems..
