US Election 2020
Re: US Election 2020
Of course some go over the top. The larger effect, is nice people keeping their mouths shut.
Progressives HAVE to go too far. That's the philosophy.
Brett Weinstein said it more clearly, when he said he wishes he could be a conservative.
His reasoning was, once society had advanced sufficiently, no more progress would cause improvement, so it would be SO good, it would be worth conserving (rather than progressing).

Re: US Election 2020
Those sections of the progressive movement in general who have gone over the top are a small but vocal minority, who naturally get lots of attention from conservative media. Any minor criticism of them I may have is relatively unimportant in comparison to the fight against conservative, religion-based repressive forces still working in society to deny people freedom in matters of sex and gender.

Re: US Election 2020
You misunderstood.
Progressivism IS going 'over the top'. It's how progress happens.
A lot of progressivism is shit ideas, being tried out for fit. The best ones will succeed, and become 'conservatism' in a few years.
I'm not trying to attack progressivism, just define it.

It is normal for people to want to see society progressing toward less inequality.Cunt wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 11:28 pmYou misunderstood.

Progress means different things to different people. For some, extending human and civil rights to trans people as individuals and as a group, or allowing Black people to vote, or even running the country as a secular state is an unconscionable regressive step too far.

The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Progress means progress. I can see that you didn't understand my (possible mangling) retelling of Weinsteins point...about wishing he could be a conservative.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 9:57 amProgress means different things to different people. If society gets where you think it should be, would you still be progressive?

Re: US Election 2020
I get your point that one of the factors pushing progress is people who push social boundaries, and who may initially look like crazies. There were probably people 50 years ago advocating gay marriage, but even generally liberal people of the time would have thought it a bridge too far.Cunt wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 3:18 pmProgress means progress. But I don't see the current angry minority of what you can loosely call progressives, the ones who are preoccupied with attacking people on social media for not being fully "woke" falling into that category. They are not dreaming of a more tolerant future, they are just enjoying a tribal battle...

Re: US Election 2020
The woke won this election. So the next 4 years can be blamed squarely on the progresseives in the US. As always, we should hope they do well, but with the sharp turn in 2016, it promises to be a bit dramatic.

Re: US Election 2020
I think the more we focus on this minority as representing some aspect of progressivism the more the discussion of progressive ideas gets sidetracked along a redundant siding and the more the mainstream come to associate progressives and their ideas with bickering wokescolds. I mean, some people think this noisey fringe actually won the US election for chrissakes!JimC wrote:I get your point that one of the factors pushing progress is people who push social boundaries, and who may initially look like crazies. Re: US Election 2020
A big part of the assault by conservatives against the progressive movement in general is to highlight as many examples of angry, intolerant statements from what we might call the zealots, who are a small but noisy minority. I think that it's important that they are called to account by people from the wider movement when their intolerance of diverse opinions becomes divisive and damaging.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 7:56 pmI think the more we focus on this minority as representing some aspect of progressivism the more the discussion of progressive ideas gets sidetracked along a redundant siding and the more the mainstream come to associate progressives and their ideas with bickering wokescolds. Re: US Election 2020
It is over. And the Iowa Democrat should go to her state to complain. A six vote win would require all kinds of checks. There might be 6 dead Republicans voting.
