I don't think it will ever go away completely, but hopefully a vaccine program will allow hospital admissions to go way down - the pressure on health systems at the moment is one of the most ominous features of the current second/third/fourth wave, particularly in Europe and the US...

What is a vaccine?

I mean, if it doesn't provide immunity.

No answer ever seems to be reason enough to remove power, from governments that sometimes appear to enjoy authoritarianism.

Immunity is not an all or nothing proposition. It may not provide immunity to all, and the immunity may fade with time. However, the real point is statistical; the higher the proportion of a population who are immune (or mostly so) the slower the transmission rate will be, and the faster the pandemic will diminish.

What metrics/results would cause you to stop following the news and government mandates?

I ask because I don't even know myself. I used to think survival rate or death rate, but Weinstein straitened me out about that. I also thought that 'R-naught' being below a certain number, but that doesn't seem to be good enough (due to suspected asymptomatic transmission)

Is there something that would make it clear enough to you? Or even better to a regular peon?

NSW is now pestilence central, rather than Victoria!

Mind you, 20 or so new cases is paltry compared to Europe or the US...

It has to start somewhere.

Quite amazing.

Europe is paying less than U.S. for many coronavirus vaccines
The European Union is paying less money than the United States for a range of coronavirus vaccines, including the Pfizer-BioNTech inoculation currently being rolled out across the country, according to a Washington Post comparison of the breakdowns.

The costs to the E.U. had been confidential until a Belgian official tweeted — and then deleted — a list late Thursday.

Comparing that list to calculations by Bernstein Research, an analysis and investment firm, it appears the 27-nation union has a 24 percent discount on the Pfizer vaccine compared to the United States, paying $14.76 per dose compared to $19.50 in the United States. Some of the difference may reflect that the E.U. subsidized that vaccine’s development.

The bloc will pay 45 percent less than the United States for the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine currently under development. But it will pay 20 percent more than the United States for the Moderna vaccine, which is expected to be approved for U.S. use on Friday.

If a vaccine doesn't provide immunity, is it really worth the fifteen bucks?

1. Vaccines for coronavirus should be free, and in fact will be in civilised countries.

2. You clearly did not read my earlier post on the nature of immunity. The various vaccines are being shown by rigorous scientific trials to offer a significant although not perfect level of immunity, making it clear that, at a population level, the higher the proportion who are vaccinated, the lower the rate of transmission becomes. Simple.

People of my county: Oh, well, people are going to die. I don't any more unemployment benefits.

"The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department reported 149 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lancaster County, bringing the community total to 20,741. Two additional COVID-19 deaths have been reported, raising the total to 135."

Australia losing grip again even with all those masks.
The northern beaches area of Sydney entered a four-day lockdown to midnight on Wednesday as authorities try to contain a Covid-19 outbreak ahead of Christmas.
Twenty-three new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in the Australian state of New South Wales, 21 of those so far linked to the new northern beaches outbreak. The state’s premier, Gladys Berejiklian, warned further restrictions for the rest of Sydney were possible on Sunday if the outbreak appeared more widespread.
The Australian states of Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania imposed new travel rules for people arriving in their states from New South Wales and urged their residents not to travel there.

From the same review:
The Times reports on another testing fiasco. According to its lead story, the prime minister’s plan to post millions of testing kits to UK homes every week, thereby avoiding the need for a lockdown, is being blocked by the medicines regulator.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reportedly says the tests are not accurate enough when carried out by people at home.
