Yet we regularly have talk of ordaining school uniforms her, because the kids attending in their own clothes are regarded as deleteriously divisive, as cliques of kids who can afford to flaunt this brand or that are exclusive of those who can't of won't...
There's a lot to be said for that argument. Unfortunately, having experienced both, I can say with confidence that it doesn't matter. I think our focus should be elsewhere e.g. providing support and encouraging skills to cope with the various realities everyone will undoubtedly encounter.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

We had a period of that as well but most "must have" labels have gone. I hated uniforms. There was no bigger class divider.

I don't quite get it, are there, like, classy and expensive uniforms to denote swanky schools and cheapo ones for less prestigious establishments?

It would be no different if there was no uniform. Rich kids would wear top fashion and the poor would wear dregs. This is just Scot projecting his own insecurities onto the world and acting like it is a fact.

Very much so. The usual nondescript navy blue blazer worn in most state schools can be bought in various shops and the badges are sold by the school itself and has to be sown on. Only, in my days, there was a special first fifteen blazer presented by the school to the first fifteen rugby team. I got that but never wore it as I preferred my leather very cool French jacket and my Gitanes.

The private schools, or public in England, uniforms had to be bought at an outfitters including sports gear. There was a whole spectrum of colours used. In Edinburgh the snobbish uniform of all was Fettes.

It is recently become a mixed school. Blair the Labour PM. went there.
In Glasgow it is Hutchinson's:

I went to private schools and was glad we had a uniform so I didn't have to worry about what to wear.

Must have been approved

Stopped wearing a uniform after one year at secondary school. Never had any trouble dressing and was never part of the sheeple.

Yes!

We had uniforms (blue blazer, black trousers, white shirt, school tie) until my senior year, when they got rid of uniforms and brought gurls in. Poor little rich kids wearing their Gucci got laughed at by the cool kids, who wore stuff from the Army-Navy surplus store. Para boots, camo fatigues, and a Che shirt. Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh! It was the 70s, after all.

That is exactly how it goes even today. Dutch kids dont do glam. Certain people who live in a trailer dont understand that. Quiet quality is a far better course than loud bling.
