So even though there is no scientific evidence you are willing to cut off a main human ability that of recognising and processing expressions on human faces? Sorry we dont. I can imagine they are popular in Edinburgh. A certain section of Edinburgh society never bothered about the rest of the society's existence anyway so forcing them to wear masks would happily increase anonymity which is of course true of most of the British society. Seeing faces is very important here as is interaction with each other. For that to be removed for a "just in case" measure is dead in the water.

That's a completely different point and a different opinion, but I'm happy to indulge you as you think it addresses my question. So, let's agree for the sake of argument that recognising faces is a fundamental human quality or attribute, one which you believe impacts any and every individual's humanity - which is to say that recognising faces is tied to every person's status as a fully authentic human being: are people who do not recognise faces less than human, and if so, in what way and to what extent?

It is not a different point. Dehumanisation requires certain attributes of the human being to be cancelled. Recognising each other is a very basic primary attribute and is used by everyone. To be able to recognise and perceive a facial expression is fundamental to our well-being and having it removed by a "just in case" measure which has such great influence on society is ridiculous beyond any stretch of the imagination.
If we had the equivalent of the Black Death and non-medical masks had been scientifically tested and proven to be effective I would not object to it as a temporary measure. But we have had this week end officially two deaths and we dont have the Black Death either. Also testing positive does not mean it is full blown case.
There is at present a constitutional case being brought before the Supreme court. The basic crux is simple; to remove the veil there had to be an act of parliament so for this there should be an act of parliament but it is dead in the water as there is no majority.
This is just one of impositions being applied on the back of special measures but was not mentioned in them and which are in contravention of the constitution.

So, posting on web forums is dehumanising because you cannot see facial expressions. So is making telephone calls or using text chats.

What about wearing sun glasses? When I was making political advertising on the streets, I personally found eyes covered by sunglasses a lot more distressing than covered mouths (whether with a scarf because of a cold winter or the rare muslim women wearing niqabs).

You know what Trump said a month ago? He said the rising numbers don't matter because there isn't rising number of deaths. But that's because it takes several weeks before we see deaths from infections. And now a month later we see rising number of deaths in the US. So don't use the same faulty arguments as Trump...

Scot doesn't like phone calls. Or texts. Or sunglasses.

Posting on forums dehumanising? It has a totally different function. Our facial expressions are not important but our words are.
Sunglasses are very temporary but the rest of the face is visible. Look official numbers (and they are becoming a big point of conjecture as more are questioning them) here they are still relatively low. 35,000 a year die of stress related illnesses.
But you are missing the major point: Is it right to impose a measure(s) on the public that has no scientific basis and that will make a major impression on how society operates?

You have to wear masks in supermarkets or pubic transport. I hardly interact with other people in this setting anyway, with our without mask.

No.
In the case of masks the scientific evidence is there and has been given to you.

Only on public transport and never in supermarkets. In fact the only control is numbers and nobody these days bothers about that. Public transport was economic decision.
