Don't use that expression. It only confuses our member from Yellowknife. He thinks it means "backpedalling".

This is the ideal, when a country can do random non-symptomatic tests. Many countries are not there yet.Tero wrote: ↑Sun May 31, 2020 7:52 pmThe Italy situation. I don't know that they are testing beyond the reported cases with symptoms. But there is a clear hump here. Orange is new daily cases. Oh they must be, 70 000 tests daily: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_ ... c_in_Italy

Italy had 800 new cases over 1 day. Lowest one day change for weeks.

I hope this episode will be the end of handshaking and worse germ spreading rituals among humans.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I like touching. I think most people do, NB.
The other day, I met a lady out on the trail, and while we were chatting, she reached out to shake hands. I shook hands without even thinking of it.
I get that I should have recoiled in disgust, and stopped talking to her, but I still feel that would be a bit awkward...what do YOU do when you encounter someone not as 'covid-compliant' as yourself?

I never like shaking hands. There's a difference between meeting a close relative or close friend and other people. The habit of touching tens of different people within a short time is totally unhygienic, even when there is no new virus around. Currently, no one expects to shake hands. I hope this will continue long after this pandemic is over. We should switch to using one of the Asian methods to greet each other. Bow. Or touch your own chest.

I've seen the handshaking abused. Storytime...NineBerry wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 9:28 pmI never like shaking hands. Back in the day, I was pissed at me for a mistake. A young woman (practicum student) was in a shelter, introducing herself to people. One old guy had really gotten interested in her, and held her handshake too long. I didn't think I should step in, and later thought that was a mistake.
Nothing bad happened, except that it took her longer than she wanted to finish the handshake, but it sat poorly with me. Well, years later and shes a social worker while I'm not, so lets assume she was fine.
Anyway, even with that kind of abuse fresh in my memory, I like the practice. I have seen many lesser abuses around handshakes. Also some gaffes, missteps and poor performances of various kinds. I think a contact that close is fraught with dangers.
So it's like a shit-test, to see how one can deal with awkward.
Like getting drunk with colleagues. If they don't handle themselves well drunk, they don't get trusted. If they don't drink at all, they don't get trusted. If they drink, sing and shake hands just right, they are 'checked out'.
I don't think it's perfect, but I like the system. I guess I'm used to it and wish it comes back.
Probably won't though. That strange lady (with the cute dog) might be one of the last strangers I touch that way. Not sure I'm as happy about it as you can be.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Almost nothing has happened for days. I put some junk cabinets out for trash. Our part of the cleaning and upgrading bug at the neighborhood. Did minimal yard work.
Tomorrow we are borrowing a canopy for Sat garage sale. That way nobody goes inside the garage. The junk will be outside.
