Laying out the known facts that tend to lend doubt to the veracity of Tara Reade's claims. I don't think that their truth or falsehood will have much bearing on the election though.

When Tara Reade first made her assault allegation against Joe Biden, I thought the charge was more likely to be true than false. To be clear, I had no intention of changing my vote. The allegation came too late to reopen the nominating process without doing violence to the expressed will of the electorate. And I’ve always believed the primary criteria for voting on a candidate is their policy impact (which is why I wrote a column in 2018 defending Republicans who still supported Roy Moore over Doug Jones). But I did feel bad about voting for a candidate I suspected had done something terrible.

Since then, however, two long, detailed reports — by Vox’s Laura McGann, and by PBS NewsHour — have delved into Reade’s allegations. Neither reaches a definitive conclusion. But both of them on balance add a lot of grounds for skepticism. At this point, Reade’s allegation seems to me to be more likely to be false than true.

The allegations are not the interesting part. The way the Dems handle it vs the way they handle similar allegations against Kavanaugh shows how much of their actions are motivated by outrage at sexual mistreatment of women, and how much is just political theatre.

If someone does express a strong opinion one way or the other, they risk the same kind of exposure.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez handily defeated CNBC contributor and Wall Street-backed challenger Michelle Caruso-Cabrera in the Democratic primary for New York’s 14th Congressional District on Tuesday, a victory that the progressive congresswoman celebrated as evidence that “money couldn’t buy a movement.”

“Wall Street CEOs, from Goldman Sachs to Blackstone, poured in millions to defeat our grassroots campaign tonight,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted after the Associated Press declared her the winner Tuesday night.

“Thank you NY-14, and every person who pitched in for tonight’s victory,” the congresswoman said. “Here’s to speaking truth to power.”
